The M16A1 was the result of efforts to improve the shortcomings of the early M16 assault rifle. Among the changes made to the design was the replacement of the three-prong flash suppressor with a birdcage flash suppressor which reduced the likelihood of debris becoming caught in the bore, the addition of a forward assist to aid in chambering a round in a dirty chamber, fencing around the magazine release to prevent accidental loss of the magazine, modification to the bolt to prevent incorrect assembly to the bolt, and the issuing of cleaning kits for the rifle. While the M16A1 is no longer in service with the US military having long since been replaced with more modern iterations of the design, it is still in service with military and paramilitary organizations around the world.
