Originally designated as the Raketenpanzerbüchse, the Panzerschreck was developed by the Germans from captured samples of the American-made Bazooka. The weapons penetrative ability was effective against Allied tanks; however, the smoky exhaust of the rocket compelled Panzerschreck teams to relocate after each shot in order to avoid being the victim of return fire. The rocket's exhausted also forced the use of a protective mask to be worn by the operator or for the fitting of a protective shield to the launcher in order to prevent the weapon's operator from being seriously burned.

While it was itself influenced by the American Bazooka, the Panzerschreck also influenced the design of other anti-tank weapons. The M20 Super Bazooka fielded by the Americans later in the war utilized a larger caliber as such was proven effective by the German weapon. Post-war, the Finnish military also continued to field the Panzerschreck before it was finally replaced by the 55 S 55 in the late '50s. The Panzerschreck also saw use during the war with not only Germany and Finland but also Italy, Hungary, and Romania.
