Invented in 1964 by Gordon Ingram, the MAC-10 submachine gun is quite easily one of the most well-known .45 caliber submachine guns in the world. With a high rate of fire, a potent round, and capable of accepting a two-stage SIONICS suppressor, the MAC-10 proved itself to be a an effective weapon. Despite limited use with several elite military units such as the US Navy SEALs and UK SAS, the weapon was ultimately unsuccessful in sales. The design would change hands between several different companies through the years with each having limited success commercially. Currently Masterpiece Arms manufactures semi-automatic variants which fire from a closed bolt for sale on the civilian market.

Despite its limited military career, the MAC-10 remains a popular firearm on the US market. Original transferable examples of the fully automatic MAC-10 are often acquired as a first machine gun by some American shooters thanks to the designs comparatively low price (~$5500 versus $25,000 for a M16A1). The weapons popularity has also spawned a small industry which produces accessories such as caliber conversions, stocks, upper receivers, and other accessories. Semi-automatic variants also retain some popularity, mostly as a novelty item with some carbines being used for self-defense purposes.
