Ruler of the Abyss

Ruler of the Abyss

Who dares sail these waters?
Who trespasses upon the dark abyss?
Who is it that risks the great serpent's wrath?
Who is the fool that disregards the ocean's warnings?

Sail on, sail on.
Sail to the edge of the world.
Sail to the land of myth and legend,
where only monsters and nightmares await.

For at the edge of the world lies a
dark ocean untouched by the light of the sun.
Come and see these waters.
Waters lit only by the light of the full moon.

Stare down from your ship.
Stare down into the depths if you dare.
Stare down into the abyss and watch
as it stares back into your soul.

Sail on, sail on,
Sail to the edge of the world.
Those who sail must do so with caution.
Never must you sail beneath the light of the moon.

Follow the stars only and go,
go wherever the wind may take you.
But never beneath the moon.

For when the moon is lit and your
ship illuminated for all of the abyss to see
then you will know true fear.
Then you will stare into the face of death itself.

Sail on, brave sailor, sail on,
but awaken not the ruler of the depths.
It is the moon's glow that summons her.
A monstrous serpent that makes
the ocean itself tremble and shake.

Her jaws are steel.
Her teeth spears of iron.
Her roar is the maelstrom that
devours your ship banishing it to the depths.

Her claws are cannons that
tear and destroy all that lie before them.
Her tail the wave that smashes without remorse.

Sail not under the glow of the moon,
for the serpent's eye will open then and
there will be no escape.

Sail to the edge of the world
where mermaids dance and
monsters play.

But move quickly brave sailor
for the ruler of the depths lies
in wait for all those who stray.

Sail on, brave sailor, sail on.
Run like the wind over the dark abyss.
The ruler of the abyss has no patience for fools.
For if she catches you there will
not even be a moment left in which to pray.

My second visual poetry submission! I didn't think I was going to fit it all into one picture there honestly, but after fiddling around with the font and the text size I found one that worked! The part in red is meant to be read last by the way. I was inspired to write this poem after listening to two songs from the musical duo Nox Arcana. I'll put links to them down below.

This poem tells the tale of a great sea monster that lives at the edge of the world. A place filled with great beasts from myth and legend. Only fools dare to sail such waters and only those with a death wish do so under the full moon...
