The Crusader III was the ultimate development of the F-8 Crusader, known as the "Last gunfighter", as it was the last Navy fighter to have cannon as its primary armament. The XF8U-3 was designed to compete against the F-4 Phantom, but lost out due to its single mission oriented design. While performing better than the F-4, it lacked the multi role ability of the Phantom. Five were built, being passed to NASA and eventually scrapped
