1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1

The Mach 1 was first introduced in 1969 and was one of packages introduced as part of the Mustangs major restyling and was equipped with either a 351 Cleveland, a 390, or a 428 V8 motor, equipped with the 428 engine it was capble of 13 second quarter mile et's and a top speed of 155 MPH.

1970 the Mach 1 got a minor face lift but still the same body but with 390 engine option axed out and different performance figures.

But the real change would come in 1971 when Ford a new fully redesigned Mustang.

It's wheelbase was one inch longer and it's full length two inches longer.

The new Mach 1 introduced in 1971 came with two new engines to choose from a 302 V8 and a 429 V8 motor and the 429 came with two different engine options to choose from a Cobra Jet R package that made 370 HP or a Super Cobra Jet R package that made 375 HP, when equipped with the Super Cobra Jet R package the 1971 Mach 1 was capble of doing 0 to 60 in 7.1 seconds and can cover the quarter mile in 14.09 seconds at a speed of 102 MPH.

Basically a de-stroked T-Bird/Lincoln 460 V8 the 429 had wedge shaped combustion chambers derived from up to date performance technology at the time.

The CJ-R utilized large valves, a hydraulic, cam, 4-bolt mains, re-worked porting, and a 700-CFM Quadrajet carburator (sourced from GM).

A Ram-Air induction system was included.

A drag pack option, with either a 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential or a 4.11:1 Detroit Locker axle was mandatory.

This option also included an oil cooler for when things really got hot at the drag strip.

Other 429 SCJ-R performance features included solid valve lifters, adjustable rocker arms, drop-forged pistons, and a 780-CFM Holley Carburator.
Ford put together 1,255 of the CJ-R equipped Mach-1's and 610 SCJ-R's
