World of Fir Race Guide: Furs by Shadewrecker

Introduction
The children of Azalea are a clever and resourceful bunch. Lacking the magic and brute strength granted to the Dragons, these furry fellows banded together to create societies designed to grow, conquer, and provide for its citizens, just as their divine mandate instructed. In contrast to the traditionalism and community of the Dragons, Furs live by a code of individualism, hard work, and adherence to the rule of law. They’re quick-witted and can adapt to a variety of climates and jobs, but they can often come off as being self-centered or oblivious to the plight of others.

Variants and Regions
Furs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, all creatures conforming to our definition of ‘mammal,’ and sharing the same names as our world’s species’ as well (rats, cats, rabbits, bears, etc). They’re smaller and slimmer on average than Dragons, and come in equal parts bright ‘unnatural’ colors (blues, greens, etc.) and equal parts ‘normal’ colors (browns, greys, etc.). Furs do not distinguish between subspecies, so a wolf will not share the same prejudice of a fox as they would a Dragon. Hybrids of fur subspecies are not common, but not because there isn’t intermixing, but simply because they are only produced rarely. As mentioned earlier, Furs can be found in a variety of climates and locations, but favor locations near rivers and lakes, which includes the whole of Faren, the plains and forests of Calesca, and even small populations in the mountains of Daltei and deserts of lower Calesca. Furs are plantigrade, but can come with a mix of digitgrade and plantigrade, depending on the variant. Female furs have breasts, and are culturally expected to cover up, but male furs often forgo shirts and other top coverings.

Traits and Abilities
Unlike the other two races of Fir, Furs’ bodies do not take very kindly to flowing Remnant, rendering them very poor magic users. It isn’t impossible for them to use magic, just difficult, and only seen very rarely. To make up for this, every Fur is born with a special Sign (power), often elemental (the most common), mystical, or psychic, but rarely, spiritual or physically altering. These abilities vary greatly, so you can probably just make something up and it would likely qualify. Furs typically have larger litters than Dragons, and live for up to 100 years or so, depending on quality of life.

Culture
Furs tend to live in large settlements, ranging from villages and towns, all the way up to large cities such as Landalsta. Males and females are widely considered equal, but, while not forbidden, experimentation with gender and sexuality is often seen as strange. Fur families are far more nuclear than those of Dragons, and marriage is a commonly utilized institution. Furs are not naturally warlike, but when driven to it, they will take up arms and defend themselves, though said ‘defense’ can often come off as disproportionate or even as vindictive retribution. There are many holidays and celebrations in Fur culture, such as the Bloom Festival, but their religion can often come off as superficial and just for show, rather than deeply held conviction. It is not that they do not respect their goddess, but more so that her role in their lives diminished as they became more self-sufficient.

Diet
All the races of Fir are omnivores, but the diet of Furs is more plant-based than that of Dragons. Wild Goar and Thel cows provide the main source of meat for the Fur diet, while wheat, rice, and various fruits and vegetables being the main staple foods.

Technology
Without access to magic, Furs have worked tirelessly to create mechanical devices to make their lives easier, which include but are not limited to: drawbridges, windmills, waterwheels, and ballistae. They might not have the easy solutions, but their dedication to technology is unparalleled among the races.
