Creostryssintilzuamyth (or just Creost) is the quartermaster for the sentient bioship MAUM (Militant's Ascension Unto Madness), which is the highest rank on the ship other than Captain. Ashanti is the Captain. Together they are the Power Couple of the ship.

The little top hat is her translator, and what you see is the top of a long jagged spike implanted directly into her brain that reads the patterns of her electric synapses to translate into multiple languages. The translation process isn't perfect so she sounds and awful lot like SHODAN.

Creost is insanely intelligent with logistics and problem solving (she's basically an alien eel with many tentacles and a neural network that runs through all of them) but her emotional intelligence is virtually nonexistent. She lacks anything remotely resembling empathy, which makes her a fantastic cutthroat pirate, and a very efficient quartermaster. It just means that her relationship with Ashanti isn't coming from a place of genuine interest, but rather a matter of problem solving: a happy Captain means a happy crew means an efficient crew, and Creost can trust no one else to handle such a delicate operation.

Whatever her motives, the Captain is happy, so you can't really fault her methods. Or her tentacles.
