2019 year review2 by ScruffyBrush

2019 year review2

ScruffyBrush

This year was busy, but not as busy with art as I would've wanted.
The good news is I'm finally "done" with school. The bad news is I'm STILL waiting for my grades so that it's 1000% official
I'll not feel truly free until it's officially confirmed and damn am I stressed about it tbh (waiting on a 20 days old and only evaluation of the semester for a given class ;-;)
anyway; slash rant.

Whatever, now time to review my art this year!
----------------------
Jan : Dr Pepper Clairen
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Dr-Pepper-Clairen-781396281

Idk how obvious it is lately but I really like doing monochrome. I love working with values and it's generally recent that I don't completely despise coloring anymore.
This was one of those monochrome that I just really like and consider finished enough to post as is. It was a limited palette challenge, but really they were pretty much all same hue imho.
Also I just really like drawing Clairen.
Regarding the comment I made mentioning I'd need to git gud or get rekt by my bf :
We're about 50/50 still :)
But I can't just play any character against him, need to pick my main or switch regularly or he adapts way quick lol.

Feb : Dune Dasher
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Dune-Dasher-785612547

This piece is remarkable as one of the few times I was given total and forced artistic freedom but actually enjoyed it a lot.
Normally being told "Draw what you want." I get the feeling that :
- Commissioner don't really care all that much. Feelsbad
But then I realise peeps wouldn't pay money if they didn't care at all. So I start to believe something worse instead :
- They don't actually want me to draw what I want and I'll have to scrap everything once I show it.
But BRH I think I knew enough to pick something we'd both enjoy without worrying too much about it.
Plus had a very generous but motivating deadline to meet so I took my time to polish it and try making a proper pixel background despite my relative fear of drawing BGs.

March : Sky Pirate Lyze
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Sky-Pirate-Lyze-791487011

This one, along with BRH's and the Hellspawn Barrager ones mark another point I tried briefly to try to address about my art this year.
I was feeling lately that my art was generally ok to good, but too often hollow.
As in it didn't tell a story.
99% Just portraits in a vacuum.
So I've been trying a bit more actively to pick more dynamic poses, draw BGs and more varied emotions.
About telling a story, this one I'm most happy with this year.
The process I used to make it was fun and pretty efficient, but also I like that overall the character's level of details fits his BG's.
Still using it as my phone bg and lockscreen (lockscreen is a white, black and blue version of it, unlocking it adds in the color, which is really cool and IIRC Lyze's idea)
I'm due for a new phone bg now tbh though.

Apr : Wyoming Coyote Homie
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Wyoming-Coyote-Homie-793754329

Idk if there's more I haven't said about telling a story, but this is another one that I like because of that.
I also really like the color scheme and that the character is firmly grounded in her environment.

May : Dusune
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Dusune-Chibi-Badge-Sample-799327750

Every once in a blue moon I find an excuse to do a raffle on twitter and usually end up depressed about ending up with 50%+ ungrateful winners and not wanting to draw anymore.
I love looking back at this one because they were truly happy and excited about it and not even bad case of impostor syndrome can break that.
Other 2 were also happy about it, which helped as I rotated working on all 3.
It's also the first time I tried doing a full badge and ship them rather than a print it yourself thing.
I'm sad to learn shipping is stupid expensive as soon as it don't fit a regular enveloppe :(
And that I'm really stupidly self-conscious about sending letters (worse than emails even), so sending all 3 took slightly longer than it should've.
But what I really remember from it is how much touched I was to receive news about happy Dusune getting their badge.

June : NOTHING. June was garbage.

School project got overwhelming.
Didn't have the expertise I needed, no guidance, no clear goal. All around crap supervisor, despite well-intentioned team.
I ended up dropping that one because I didn't care about it and supervisor was a total moron.
I prepared to do a new project I'd actually want to make and find whatever channel I had to use to pitch it rather than be stuck on the bottom of the barrel option.
Apparently you had to discover on the school's facebook page a link to a google survey you could use to submit your project.
Sadly not making that up.
That other project I'm still waiting on results.
I had higher hopes for it, I'd have pushed it much better if I didn't have to struggle with other classes.
Probably still good enough for school.

July : Collab
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/3-super-cute-dorks-807818966

I love doodling me and nox being cute and shy together. Even more when we collab it.
We haven't done that enough. I need to draw bg for one of those. I hate doing BG but it's cute.
I should do that after current commission.
I'll do that.

Aug : MSPaint and Tuna
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/MSPaint-and-Tuna-810026417

Another challenge/bandwagon piece : Paint palette, program and I added mouse only.
I'm glad I still love to draw Léon+Tuna so far.
I drew most of the sketch while bored in class.

Sept : Todd headshot
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Todd-814500705

A headshot for another fox named Todd (not my OC Todd).
Most expressive pixelart I've drawn since someone invented the wheelbread.

Oct : Casualairen
https://www.deviantart.com/nsyse/art/Casualairen-Clairen-Fanart-815476991

Good news : Drawing Clairen is still fun.
This one though marks me trying a round brush instead of phat textures.
I still like Phat textures, but I'm appreciating that too.
Back to storyless poses/vacuum portraits but oh well.
The Daniel I drew that month was story-filled (though not sure what) but I really hate some of the details or lack thereof.

Nov : L'eggo (twitter)
https://twitter.com/ZeNsyse/status/1199798104234627078

I straight up didn't draw shit in november it seems (Not even uploaded anything on twitter).
I did a "Lego Eggo" challenge though. Which was funny.
Lego my Eggo.
Not super happy with it but it's literally the only art thing I did while swamped with finals preparation.
Mostly I discovered how I can make easy sexy lego renders, which makes me really want to design random lego stuffs and order the pieces for them online now.
Which is very dangerous. I'm already trying to scale down my MTG cards collection.
I think I'll rule that I need to do that with the legos before I can buy more of those.

Dec : Nuzlocke first 3 (twitter)
https://twitter.com/ZeNsyse/status/1207163423689265152

A monochrome "doodle/sketch" I'm quite happy with depicting my 3 first pokémons for Shield Nuzlocke.
I wanted to draw the team at notable moments where I'd stop playing for the day.
But I'll maybe play too much and then try to sum it up instead. We'll see :)
Spoilers, but so far I added 3 more members and 4 out of the team evolved woo!

---------------
Previously, on new year goals :
- Challenged myself to note down 1 productive/thing I'm proud to have done every day.
Managed to do it for 3 months straight and then it got spotty, gave up at end of june.
I think it was a very positive thing though I'll try that again.
- Challenged myself to make a complete furry game by end of 2019. Yeah didn't.
Glad I tried harder while making a game for school project though.
Still want to but I think it shouldn't be a short time goal right now.
I'll just work on stuff and see where it goes/if I really like one concept to develop it further.

New year goals :
- 1+/week code
- 1+/week draw stream
- 45+ min/week exercise
- Note down things I'm happy I did before bed, no detailed logging though so I don't get lazy doing it again.
I'll note it at start of a google doc so it's easy to access instead of at the end also.

Reasonable, positive :)

Thanks for watching and maybe even reading this wall of text. Kind comments and encouragements are the reason I'll try to be more consistent in uploading art from now on.
