Are you familiar with Reaktor? That's been starting to grow on me as a VST, and it's pretty popular for sound design.

i have seen reaktor, never used it though :o it looks like it can do quite a lot

It can! :) Currently working on an ensemble for version 6 that acts as an old-school sampler. XD Rest assured, it's usually meant for more modern genres, though. ;)
