Elysant character sheet - animated - commission

A GIF showing off the different versions of a character sheet commissioned by the lovely Savallah, this design was such a pleasure to do!

Elysant is an elf witch who can take the form of a fox. She's an elegant woman with a love of nature and a black and white way of thinking, who doesn't really 'get' people and prefers to live secluded in the wild. She acts as something of a caretaker of the forest she calls home, using magical rites to restore life to dead places, and also to snatch it from things that have held on too long.

I drew heavily on pre-Spanish mythology while conceptualizing her clothes and items - the thorn image is based on a form of blood sacrifice where priests would drive thorns through the tongue as an offering. Her knife and mirror are both obsidian (associated with sorcery), making the knife too fragile to fight with... but perfect for precise cuts, as it is incredibly sharp.
Her clothes themselves are pseudo-European fantasy, and the style of the motifs was inspired by the strong graphic symbols in games like Kingdom Hearts and Code Vein.
Her spell book appears to the average viewer to be full of music interspersed with forbidden runes, but they are in fact chants she uses for her rituals and the runes are there for her to cast at a moment's notice. We decided she casts by singing and humming because... it sounded cool :D and running with the idea resulted in a spell book with an alto clef on the cover, which delighted me because they look really cool.

The tattoo on her back is her 'mark' mixed with the alchemical symbol for the philosopher's stone. Sav mentioned that the character was associated with/inspired by bugs, so her costume's patterning is actually based on a scarab... as is her bracelet! Bugs are associated with death and rebirth, which fit the rest of the brief very well, so I tried to include them in both obvious and subtle ways.

Overall I just had a crazy amount of fun with this, especially sprinkling in the details. Sav gave me a fantastic brief that made the design phase of the project run smoothly, then turned me loose to build an image based on those details. It was a great use of two weeks, and I really can't speak highly enough of working with him.
