I'm definitely not one to disregard how others interpret things, or the style I'm giving a nod to, here. Anthros are a fantasy, so to each their own... I personally prefer my anthros with a little more human in their face. Some artists are very good at drawing their characters closer to their animal counterparts, and I enjoy them, too, even if it's not my personal affinity.
Straight feral head, then the tiiiiniest tweaking to create expression, and then doing a sort of blend at the end, adding more of myself to the experiment. Nick looks kind've weird, which I think is a mix of the fact that I was using a cougar where Nick is himself a mutt, and that I couldn't quite figure out how to handle that right ear once I began moving it around.
Rod, however, goes really well with this style (IMO), and doesn't actually look too terribly different than I'd imagine him.
