This is the first time I have done fan art. So go easy on me!

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a gorgeous film! Entertaining, fun, thrilling, and rather spooky in some parts of the film. I love this movie. I love the characters.

Big Jack Horner for how unabashedly evil he was. The irremediable villain that cares for no one but himself.
Goldilocks and her family for how emotional they get. The relatable antagonists left the movie with a nice closure to their story.
Perrito and the role he plays in the story as well. An optimistic little bean with such a foul vocabulary. Still giggling at how much of a foul mouth he has. And another thing I love about this film. The crass humor tickles me in just the right spots.
Puss and Kitty also make a good pair of protagonists. The story, the drama, and the growth between them are a joy to watch.

And before we get to our star of the fan art. [ Spoiler Warning ]
Can I just say that I am surprised by the number of people that died in this movie!? Like good lord! They didn’t hide it at all. Sure there are some sprinkles of censorship with humor and things to keep it kid friendly. But like WOW!? One of the two sisters becomes a gold statue through Midas’s touch. One of the Bakers Dozen got eaten so fast, that only his bones were left behind in the Pocket Full O’ Posies! And more of them exploding into confetti when they got hit by those Baby Unicorn horns!? That was a surprise to see on the first viewing. But a pleasant surprise nonetheless.

Now then, onto the focus of my fan art.
[ Death ]
Hoo boy, where to start?
Well, I’ll start by saying that I love this interpretation of Death. He is scary. He demands respect. And most of all, his design is great. Simple but enough to put you on edge. Every scene he’s in makes me shiver. And his whistle is just Mwah! Chef kiss. A hauntingly beautiful tune that makes you go, “Oh shit! He’s here!”, along with Puss during the movie. I love how they handled him in the movie. His motives were already made clear from the start. And he never changes at all. He knows what he wants. And he’s going to get it. Again { Spoiler Warning ]

The crew didn’t need to reveal his identity in the movie. Could’ve just kept him as the Bounty Hunter who is Puss’s equal, or better than him in some cases. But nope, the reveal of him being Death is just gold. The hints were already there. You can see all of them if you keep your eyes peeled. And he’s the narrative force that drives the story forward. Puss didn’t change his attitude at the start of the movie. Until he was touched by Death’s blade. The sweet irony of that scene. The fearless hero that has never been touched by a blade before. Crumbles when Death’s sickles touched him for the first time. And that kick starts the change in Puss’s character. This is why Death is a very great representation of the Force-of-Nature archetype in a way.

As for the circles I added to my drawing. Well, I guess they can be seen as halos and all that stuff. As for why there are four rings behind him. That has something to do with the symbolism of the number 4.

“Its relationship with the cross (four points) made it an outstanding symbol of wholeness and universality.”

And I direct your attention to “Wholeness”. Why was Death in the story? Well, our titular protagonist has burned through eight of his lives. Through the reckless indulgence of life-threatening and fatal situations for the sake of adventure, fame, and thrills. And dearest Death was not having any of that nonsense. So he begins his hunt when Puss lost his eighth life, having been there every time our protagonist died. He wanted to punish the cat for not valuing his lives at all.

“So why don’t I do us both a favor and take this last one now?” He knows what he wants. And he almost gets it. Growing sick of the arrogant cat that burned through his lives. He chased after the legend, with the intent to end Puss’s story. And how do our stories end? When the time has come for death to welcome us. Thus, our story in this world has become whole. Starting when we are born and ending when we die. Death hunts Puss in Boots to personally end his reckless story himself. But he stops when our titular protagonist changes throughout the film. Puss grows and acknowledges his mortality and fights for his last life. Death sees that and stops his hunt. For Puss is no longer the arrogant legend that thought he was immortal. And gives him the chance to write a new story on his ninth life.

“You’re ruining this for me. I came here for an arrogant little legend, who thought he was immortal. But I don’t see him anymore. Live your life, Puss in Boots. Live it will.”

Oh dang… I didn’t realize how long this has become! I wanted to share my thoughts and I guess I did. Hopefully whoever reads this doesn’t mind the rambling of a random person on the internet. XD
