This was a piece I made a little while back as a commemoration/celebration of two years with the most wonderful person and companion I could ever ask for. I had a couple sketches lying around of our characters, but I felt like they wouldn’t be ‘enough’ for what I wanted, so to speak, so I finished up a sketch that I had doodled up on my anatomy notes and popped it into photoshop.

I honestly thought that at most I would have had this as a colored and shaded sketch, but after I got the flat colors down, I started painting in the background and soon I had a very detailed painterly lineless background with heavily lined subjects. Luckily I had a brush from a downloaded set in my photoshop brushes that had a similar texture to traditional graphite and I added pops of lines in the background and texture where it was needed. I really went out of my comfort zone with this piece: I tackled doing a background, and I even used a different overall method of shading that was more like painting rather than anything else. I found that I really really liked using the square and dry media brushes. This took about 5 or more hours to make and I am very happy with the result. I have a bright lighting version and one with an orange tone, like a sunset.

I dressed the characters up in formal attire that my boyfriend and I actually have (at least as far as I could remember, I didn’t have a reference for his suit, and I swapped in a red tie to match my dress), the red dress being my prom dress for this year. So in case we don’t end up going together, I can still say I have a prom picture so to speak. ;)
