Goanna and Lizard by PieLawd

Goanna and Lizard

PieLawd

Based on a Dreamtime story about how the two got their colours and why they are the way they are.

One day Goanna and Lizard wanted to go to a ceremony and they agreed to do each others ceremony body paints.

Lizard was very methodical and painted Goanna in beautiful lines and patterns, taking special care to even do Goannas belly. Goanna on the other hand was very lazy and wanted to get to the ceremony faster so when he took the paint from Lizard he used a bit of bush to cover Lizards back in sloppy dots.

When Lizard asked if he looked beautiful, Goanna lied but on the way to the ceremony Lizard saw himself in a water hole and became so angry he tried to attack Goanna. Goanna was faster though and made his way up into a tree where Lizard couldn't climb. Lizard was so angry he cursed Goanna so that he would have to always be in the trees while Lizard would live on the ground and in the warm rocks.

I really like the look and storybook style of this piece. Plus, lizard’s expression is priceless! :)

I'm happy it has a story book feel to it, it was hard to come up with something that looked like a story that even without context you would still be able to read that Lizard was really grumpy at Goanna. Also pencils are not something I am used to anymore been so looong

A lot of good classic storybooks have colored pencil art (or at least the ones I grew up with--but I am pretty old, so........), so that's how this piece feels to me. :)

Yeah as a kid I had a few books that had illustrations that were water colour, coloured pencils or a mix of both. I liked the water colour ones with pen lines over the top.

I really loved those kinds of kids books too, with the watercolors and inks. There are some illustrators now that try to emulate that in digital—there’s a book series by…..I think Jesse Sima? Not sure if I got that name right……but the books are “Not Quite Narwhal” and “Perfectly Pegasus”—the style looks reminiscent of watercolor pencils and colored pencils, but you can tell it’s digitally done. I also like Zachariah Ohora—his stuff almost looks like woodblock prints, but it’s acrylics…..he does his own picture books and illustrates for other writers—“Wolfie the Bunny” is such a funny and sweet book (written by Ame Dyckman and illustrated by Ohora).
