P&C #185: Finding His Talent

PeterAndCompany

This continues the story of how I discovered I could play piano. Like I mentioned for the last page, I was about half of Peter's age when I found my sister's keyboard and figured out how to play Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I immediately took it to my mom to show her what I could do (as all little kids do when they're proud of something). She was extremely impressed, but sadly our family's financial situation wasn't well enough off to afford a piano, so they ended up buying me my own larger keyboard to play with. It wasn't until sixth grade (several years later) that we were finally able to get a piano so I could start taking proper piano lessons.

Luckily, Peter won't have to wait that long. :)

Oh, and the sheet music he's playing is the dungeon theme for the original NES Legend of Zelda (now obviously the first songs I figured out were much simpler and only used one hand, but we don't have all the time in the world to wait for Peter to figure that out, hehe). Pretty much 90% of the music I played before taking classical lessons was video game and movie soundtracks, all figured out by ear. Even nowadays one of the first things I play when I sit down is likely a Mario or MegaMan song.
