"I approached the edge of the clearing. No deer in sight, I kept my gun at my shoulder, but with my finger clear of the trigger. The dense fog seemed to close in, somehow even closer than it was before. As I stopped moving, I noticed a very peculiar sound, one that seems unheard of, especially in a forest. A heavy and oppressive silence looming over me. I looked around for any signs of animal life, but the fog ensured I couldn't even see twenty feet away. As I looked around, I saw it. It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen. Through lack of better terms, I'd call it a set of disembodied stairs. It was as if they'd been pulled out of a house, they were even carpeted. My curiosity getting the better of me, I approached them cautiously. It was a clean cut, no nails sticking out or anything. The carpet was fresh, not a single leaf or piece of dirt on them. As I continued examining them, a sense of dread washed over me. The silence swelled as I only grew more curious. I ascended the first step."
