:D A note!

Pearlsnake

I eyeballed the top snake pretty hard from a picture :P
Cobras are amazing little buggers. We were having a conversation the other day on stream and someone was actually surprised to discover that cobras aren't always displaying their hoods and that they are in fact able to look like any other snake noodle. They are :)! Their hoods are not a separate body part that is attached to the back of their head or neck, but is actually just their neck, which they "flatten" or spread as a display; thus an anthro cobra would look like a standard snake (with a blunt, rounded snout and round pupils!) when they are relaxed ;)

This was also meant to be a small note for a friend (but I'm posting it here too because it's a handy way to point out certain character features) on why you shouldn't reference from another artist without looking up the thing you want to draw first, actually:
Not only will you be copying their unintentional mistakes, but also any
intentional mistakes and distortion.

Gonna use myself as an example (though if you're referencing from me, I'ma gently bop you, because while my art is not bad, it's not perfect either! I have a lot to learn, still!). I tag Raja as a cobra because that is what he was originally based on, but he's not meant to be an "anthro cobra". Raja's default form is his humanoid face and to set him apart from other snakes who are natural "anthros", as an unnatural being who is a form-shifter in that canon, his face is different. It is an intentional distortion; I chose for him to look that way and he isn't a very good representative of what a cobra looks like in real life at all.

:'D wow, that was a lot wordier than I thought it would be.

Yes. This. Thank you. I think most people don't understand snakes haha

Most people dont understand animals in general, and that is okay! Its impossible to know all the traits of an animal which is why its important to research and gather references C:

Very true! That's a great way to look at it! After all not everyone studies this stuff haha and even with all my zoological studies I have a hard time with anatomy if I don't reference it

    SO MUCH THIS
too many anthro cobras just have their hoods spread all the time and that irks me. Yeah, it looks cool, but... it's not right D:

X3 i find it funny that many are drawn as ears? Theyre mildly rigid, but soft and incapable of movement, like a growth! I know some are stylistic choice, but others are just from people who dont know what funny expressive noodlets cobras really are

Interesting to learn! You always see cobras with the hoods, but this has been rather educational!

xD Thanks, I'm glad it's of use. I think it's mostly just a big lack of reference~ There are not many good pictures of cobras not being the big huffy boops they usually are

Yeah, it's nice to know that about cobras, it's one of the reasons I chose another snake species for my snake girl. :)
