Ripping apart

Paper-Wings

Did a fun Feral Friday where I just went ham trying out new techniques and styles! In a probably futile attempt to find a workflow that results in faster output. For cheaper commission options. My goal was to spend 45 mins to an hour on each piece. I decided to attempt the challenge by setting two timers: one for 45 mins for the core of the art, then 15 minutes to finish up.

3. Nematious offered his eldritch monster version of his werewolf. I saw that the examples of his art were very fluffy, and in poses that emphasized lots of round shapes, which gave his character a less threatening vibe. I decided to take it to the other extreme and go completely angular. I like the multiple eyes aspect of one of his examples, so I went for that. A huge open jaw extending into the neck, muscle and bone from the jaw exposed, and weird stringiness connecting the top and lower jaw. All giving the creepiness factor of "this shouldn't be alive, or real" which plays on fear of the unknown. I started out trying to use an ink brush with a rough texture from a dry paintbrush. It had a very cool effect, but the "shakiness" of the texture actually detracted from the angular sharpness I was aiming for. Not to mention the brush density required I apply more force than is usual for me, which ended up hurting my hand (oops). I kept some of the textured lines, notably in the connective tissues and on the snarl, but I ended up overwriting much of my lineart with the gouache brush once again. Because of this I hadn't even finished the lineart by the time my hour time limit was up. I didn't want to give him just an unfinished lineart when I was advertising a colored thing... so I opted to continue work on the piece. No longer constrained by the clock, I decided to try a "rough wash" watercolor for the coloring. I felt this flowed nicely with the textured lines, allowing for pleasing color fades and mixing. When I was done with the flat colors, I considered ending there, but lighting is so important when trying to convey horror. So I took the same brush but boosted the size to 300 pixels, emphasizing the rough texture even more. As a very final touch I changed the lineart to red closest to the red part of the background to make it feel like an intentional composition instead of a werewolf head just pasted on a random background. Time spent: 2 hr 30 min.
