of my 2012 draftees, bali mahi had the more intricate history of the group, but did not garner much of my attention through his first years. he was born into a culture where his future was already decided for him, his spiritual beliefs expected to be unquestioned. his journey to pursue his own path inevitably alienated him from his family, his home and his community. even what became a necessity (shortening his tail) was a wild insult to what he was meant to stand for back in his home in india. bali essentially doled out pieces of him mind, body and soul for the game.

but he has little to show for it. after being overshadowed by an inferior player thanks to his inexplicable runaway popularity and charm, he left his agent, whom he accused of neglecting his needs as a client. he continued quietly into his second year with a new team with modest results. and with his rookie contract up, his future uncertain and with no intention of looking back, what will become of bali mahi?
