Guys, You just have no idea. There will just be so much. You guys wont know what to do. This will be a huge step for me and once I get my queue cleared I'm going ham.
Sorry for the nosy question, but why did you permanently close commissions? You're the absolute best crafter when I'm talking about wigs and expression, and seems like you were the only one who could possibly nail my character's design on a suit — I actually started saving up for a mask. Sorry again, I'm just too curious ^^"
(and looks like this picture is a perfect example of what I'm talking about, hehe. Nice work!)
I'm a designer, of many things. From web design to character design and I've been doing costume commissions for almost 4 years now. What some people want to pay me to make just isn't interesting to me. As an artist I want my art to be my designs, designs that push my limit, speak to me on a personal level and I actual have very very strong interest in making and showcasing in my portfolio as my work entirely. Commissions just aren't cutting it for my artistic skills and possibilities.
The whole "I want you to make this from my design". Is just killing my artistic skills /as/ an actual character designer. Sure it makes crafting easier to just follow another design, it could be simpler too. But that's just not what I want out of my work and passion. <3
A little more perspective on it is- I really don't like working on something and feeling as though I have to please the commissioner and not myself. Obviously this is what commissions are suppose to be like and it was perfectly fine at the time. I'm an introvert, I get anxious and I'm a perfectionist. Commissions give me awful anxiety and figuring out measurments, design, WIP's going back and having to re-do something, waiting for contact back about things. Its just too stifling, its too much when I could make something beautiful and to the best of my powers and sell it to someone who already loves it for what it is. Ya know? Sorry If I'm rambling, this is actually a subject I take very personally as a blooming/expanding artist.
Thank you so much for the reply! Well, as a learner, I see commissions as real challenges to expand my art skills and push me to my actual limits, considering that the characters I create can be freely modified by myself, and therefore are too easy to do. But the big difference here is that you are a professional artist and I'm still a noob looking for challenges, so the perspective here is a whole different thing. In other words, I understand what you mean (but I don't know how you feel, because I've never worked with serious commissions and other kinds of hard work for others). Sometimes the demanded character just doesn't "go" with our perspective, and we have to break our own rules to do something different or that we don't want to do, right? I'm just happy that you'll continue with your work anyways, because, really, it's beautiful. And you're not rambling, you're explaining. A short answer wouldn't be any better.
Hahaha thanks for understanding! Yeah I already know where I want to expand and grow so its really easy for me to focus on a part> Improve it> move on to the next part. Ive been doing commission in general since I was 12 so I've seen and drawn many many many designs. After almost 9 years I've come to develop a particular taste, but I know what also challenges me and I can incorporate those things
