Yakumo stirred.
The Green Dragonkin tried to reach his arm up to his snout…only to feel his arm wasn't there. The momentary panic hit him, until he remembered where he was. Lying on his belly on the bench in the medical room. The walls around him were currently displaying an outer space themed background.
"Are you distressed Master Yakumo?" A computerized voice asked.
"I hate being in this state Shelia." He addressed the medical system's artificial intelligence.
"Should I make a request for a Doctor?"
"No, don't. Just hurry up with the maintenance."
"Maintenance is proceeding as scheduled. No delays are expected at this time."
Yakumo glanced over to the nearby platform, where his cybernetic limbs were currently placed. Arms, legs, tail and wings. Another platform had the connectors that served to attach the cybernetics to his body.
All were being worked on by a multitude of the medical facility's mechanical arms.
Finally, he cranked his head to look over what was left of his body, and scowled.
Without his cybernetics, he was a quadruple amputee. His 'arms' ended at his shoulders. 'Legs' almost all the way up to the hip. Or was that even the right word? Because there was barely anything left of his wings or tail either.
I'm just a head and a torso. That's all that's left of me.
"Shelia, start putting my limbs back on the moment they're done with maintenance. Don't wait until all the way at the end."
"Acknowledged Master Yakumo." The AI responded.
Yakumo again glanced towards his cybernetic arm on the platform. He felt that empty space where his real arms should've been. Try as he might, he couldn't recall the feeling of having his own claws. It partly terrified him, partly disgusted him.
Shelia gradually re-attached the connectors to his flesh, covering up most of the scar tissue that was left after the loss of his limbs. His cybernetic right arm, left leg and tail were attached as the AI went about its work.
Yakumo used his re-attached cybernetic arm to support his head better. The cold metal against his chin was a feeling he'd been accustomed too by now. He flexed the claws of the arm, and they responded. Yet, they still felt foreign at times. They obeyed his every command, yet they somehow didn't feel like a part of him.
The medical system's arms came over to the connector for his right leg to do some further touching up. There was the whizzing of metal grinding against metal, with sparks emitting. There was no pain, since it wasn't against his flesh and scales, but Yakumo cringed, clenching the fist that he could.
The whirling metal reminded him too much of that meat grinding machine. He remembered falling, opening his wings in vain as the distance was too short to stop his fall. He'd stuck out his claws in a futile attempt, and watched them literally sliced to shreds in front of his face…
Yakumo shook the memory away.
"Are you in pain, Master Yakumo?" The AI queried.
"Not the physical type." Yakumo growled. "You're not programmed to understand emotional pain."
"That is beyond my parameters. Should I call for a Doctor to assist?"
"No Shelia, it's fine."
"Acknowledged."
Yakumo lay his head back down as he returned to watching the system's mechanical arms doing their work.
"How much longer till I'm as much a machine as you, Shelia?" Yakumo muttered.
"Could you please repeat, Master Yakumo? I did not understand your question."
"Nevermind, just forget that part. Finish up this maintenance."
Yakumo closed his eyes. The Guild Master had a mission for him after this. That would help get his mind off things.

Well that was surprisingly sobering and interesting at the same time. Parts of that reminded me of the symptoms of Phantom limb syndrome, too. Cybernetics aren't always fun.

Thanks! That's what I was trying to capture, the particular downside of cybernetics and his situation.
