Bastet for sorcha by nessyo

Bastet for sorcha

nessyo

My friend sorcha said she wanted met o design her a character based on bastet and she wanted me to use my knowledge as an art history major who REALLY loves egypt. so.
SO HERE WE GO.

Hopefully she looks arabian, because i was going for a light-bodied elegant desert-bred horse. Why? Bast is a long-legged light-bodied elegant cat, when she's shown as a cat, and i wanted a horse parallel to that.
Massive ears because most images of bast show her with large ears for a cat. Her ears looked small when i made them normal sized cat ears, so now they are massive so as to be proportional to the cat-bast, when the face is elongated into a horse face.
Lion tail because originally bastet was a solar lion goddess. It's thought that she split into different goddesses, one of whom was a lioness goddess who took on her more warlike aspects. Bast in her human form is sometimes shown with the tri-part hairstyle common to depictions of Egyptian women, but sometimes also shown bald-- her cat form is usually shown bald. Thus, i went with no neck-mane. But i do love hair so, and since bast does have a lionine history, i used that as an excuse to recall bast's history and bring in that lion tail, and ALSO to make it full of nice poofy hair. Because hair!
Green cat eyes, because come on now, cat.

Let's jump into coloration. Here, the associations get extremely loose, so bear with me.
Her coloring is made up of four colors mainly: Purple black, green, blue, and pale yellowy white.
I'll totally admit-- the purplish tones in the black are my own preference, because i do love me some purple. But their quick fade into black is because bast is usually shown as a heavily decorated black cat.
Blue and green are sacred colors in ancient egypt-- blue for water and sky, green for rich foliage. Both of these colors are associated with the nile and fertility, since the nile is kiiind of the only reason egypt was ever a thing, and the egyptians knew that the fertility of their land was tied into it's annual (and extremely predictable) flooding.
She has both stripes and spots-- both of which are kitty markings. The blue is where the stripes are, because it recalls the movement of rivers-- and in a lot of them, I've tried to loosely parallel the shape of a river delta. Half of egypt was on the nile river's delta, and it was extremely fertile land. It was especially fertile when the river flooded and spread black silt over the land. Her socks are kind of sandy creamy color, instead of plain white, for sand.
The point of all of these colors: Fertility! Fertilty! and more fertility! The egyptians probably saw cats similarly to how we see rabbits: extremely fertile. That is why, among the many things bastet could be prayed to for, fertility was pretty high on that list.

And now for the jewelry!
The basic is simple: Egyptians liked jewelry, and imbued their jewelry with all kinds of symbolism. Gold is most basic: yellow and reflective like the sun. One must remember that all of egypt's primary national gods have had a major solar aspect, and anything that was like the fierce sun was good. Thus, gold! Gold everywhere!
Bastet traditionally holds an Ankh, which is a symbol of both life and-- wait for it--- fertility! Unfortunately, horses lack the hands to hold something, so nekhbet (who i will address shortly) holds it for her, and there are ankhs hanging on all of her leg bracelets.
nekbet, the vulture, was a protective goddess; she is often shown on crowns-- and often crowns that queens wear.

aaand my internet cut out and lost half of what i was saying so. :|
the scarab on the head is there to represent eternity, birth, and rebirth.
