The Rarest", a Nene Goose. Nene geese numbered only 30 individuals in the 1950s. Through careful breeding programs, they were brought back from the brink of extinction, and today number around 800 in the wild after they were re-introduced to their native homes in Hawai’i, Maui, and Kaua’i. I fell in love with the Nene after meeting a few and observing their overall gentle nature.

I had no idea there was a goose so endangered. You are lucky to see some in person. Your work is quite handsome!

that explains why they're the state bird then! I'm working on a series involving all the state birds, and was pretty surprised to find that of all the birds in Hawaii their state bird was a goose

I remember growing up, hearing about those geese. For some reason they stuck in my head, probably because they were the face of extinction I remember most, even before Pandas.
