Qaw the Raven by Nambroth

Qaw the Raven

Nambroth

This was originally completed in 2013. I have since modified it further to add a second labradorite stone to the forehead at the request of the client, in hopes that it would be less likely to be mistaken for the raven from Game of Thrones. Qaw is NOT inspired by the "Three-Eyed Raven".

The base resin is done by the very talented Crystumes and was based on her crow blank. I then sculpted it further to be a heavier raven bill, and sanded, and sculpted and sanded, painted and set the eyes, and furred/feathered it. I used wild boar bristles for the rictal bristles, because I felt faux fur would be too fluffy in appearance for that area. This is a "fantasy" raven, and though it's hard to tell there is purple iridescence on the crest, as well as the more obvious labradorite gemstone set into the forehead. I hand set about a billion (okay, maybe 300 or so) feathers into the crest and throat of this raven. The feathers are chicken feathers, many molted from my own birds.

While I did model it for these terrible rushed photos before shipping it, this mask did go out to a client and belongs to, is worn, and preformed by Qaw themself. This mask is not mine nor do I wear it.

If you don't mind me asking, I'm curious how you changed the beak shape for this. I'm working on one of the Crystumes crow/raven blanks and I'm looking to obtain a more raven shape on the beak.

      Just with hand sculpting.

Utilizing a polymer clay (build up) or just carving it down with tools?

        • Link

Both, but I never use polymer clay, I only use epoxy :)

Oh hey now there is an idea :O Thank you Nambroth! I was excited to see that someone else noticed (and fixed!) this beak issue.

I don't think it was anything wrong :) Crystal does an awesome job and is always improving. I like to modify them a bit to suit my style, but that doesn't mean that she did a poor job. On the contrary, she's my favorite base sculptor!

Honestly I had issues with even getting my order from her... and when I did it made my roomie sick as the box was laden with smoke. (He is highly allergic) Ended up in an ER visit. So I was less than pleased. As for the base, it's a good start but it needs some mods. :)

Sorry to hear that! I've gotten many bases from her and no problems so far. :) I've never noticed a smoke smell and I'm sensitive (though admittedly not allergic). Even the fur she's sent me smelled fresh. Anyhow, the comment section of my art is probably not the best place to air grievances?

Wasn't a grievance, more so an honest statement. You said she was your favorite, I replied with a note about my ER trip. Again, thank you for the ideas on fixing this head. I'll have fun with the process. Your work turned out amazing, thus why I made a comment asking for tips. So thank you for your kind words in that.

No problem. I just find it inappropriate to complain about another artist and suggest that their work needed "fixing" in the comments of my submission. Probably best to take it up with that artist in private? If you feel it warrants letting others know, there are other (much better) avenues for such things. Again, I've never had a problem, and have received over 9 blanks plus other items from her. Respectfully, I'd like to request that this conversation end here.

As for "fixing" it. Again this is a matter of opinion. I don't feel it is raven like, and that is my goal to modify it to be thus. I have no problems with stating that the anatomy is not raven based but crow based.

Perhaps we have different blanks? The one I used for Qaw was sold as a crow/raven. (this blank, sans eyes of course) http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9721278/
I know she's since sculpted a different corvid base as the one I used for Qaw is "retired".
Regardless of the base, she has pretty good photos so I knew what I was getting, and any alterations were my choice.
In the end, make the perfect raven yourself, or alter it if you see fit, but it's pretty rude to suggest this in the way that you have. That's all I have to say.

Really though, let's drop it. I requested that the conversation end, please.
