Bölthorn and Suttungr

Motsaenggin

Squandered the ink on this one, OOPS. Anyway, this is Bölthorn and Suttungr, the Jotuns of Faith and Hedonism, respectively. Not exactly the best of friends, but not the worst of enemies either. Drawn on a less-than-A5 sized paper of questionable quality. :V

Here you go ! Looks like those two got a lot to talk about.
I'm amazed at your linework, very precise and the size variation is subtle. Can't you use some white acrylics on the squandered ink ?

It's a bit of a sad story really (long ramble ahead): Suttungr is the prime deity of inebriation, drugs and brew - giving her the title of "Eternal Brewmaster" and variations thereof. She wished for the world contained within my universe to be happy and peaceful, with an equally happy and peaceful folk living in it... so she introduced them to chewing leaves and alcohol. Unfortunately, people REALLY liked chewing leaves and alcohol... and a lot of squabbles and fights broke out because of it, making Suttungr very sad.

Bölthorn decided to rectify Suttungr's mistakes, and so created faith - particularly the kind of faith that has you abstain from any of Suttungr's products. Thus, followers of Bölthorn and Suttungr fight a lot due to their not-exactly-getting-along kind of deal. Bölthorn considers Suttungr a bit of a pain, but she is always too drunk and / or otherwise in a state of not caring that his preaching generally falls upon deaf ears. A pity, really, but it does make for some interesting encounters - both between the deities themselves as well as their followers. <:

And thank you for the kind words! I did try to rectify the mistakes with both white acrylic, white acrylic ink AND watered down acrylics, but the new ink appears to just kind of blend with it. I suspect it's due to it being water-soluble, but I'm a little surprised that not even thick acrylics managed to get around it. There's also the issue that I drew this on pretty low-quality paper, but... a learning lesson, I suppose! xD

It sounds like you've developped an interesting universe. From the description I thought they were Norse deities. I'm intrigued now.
I like the way you described their relationship, because while they represents two extremes they are usually both present in someone's character, so it makes sense they might get along sometimes.
And yeah, you might not want to spoil the drawing just to correct that if the paper is capricious, just say it's some cool digital effect to make it look more realistic !

Thank you! They are indeed Norse deities, and I went that path because I belong to the region myself and developing characters based on Norse mythology makes for some potentially very interesting personalities.

As for the relationship between them, I've always liked the idea that gods and deities do not always agree with one another. Back in my Baldur's Gate days I also got a liking for how followers of the different gods would occasionally butt heads together in various types of conflicts, so I borrowed a few ideas from that. The deities in my universe are overall not openly hostile to one another, due to the mutual respect for "The Balance", a construction of the highest of the deities, Ymir, which is designed to make the world not go to utter shite basically. They know they need to cooperate on some level, and therefore they just... mostly tolerate one another. A little bit.

Suttungr is overall pretty chill tho', likely due to her constant inebriation. Her followers even claim that simply touching her will give them a divine contact high - a belief that holds so strongly that her highest clerical servants are known to deliberately ingest herbal concoctions to go on permanent trips. Very radical!

And yeah, I'll go the good old path of "it's not an error, it's a feature" in regards to the mistakes I made, hahah. Admittedly I was completely new to the brushes I used, but that is why it's so nice to test it out on crappy paper and quick doodles! C:

Oh really, you're from Scandinavia ? Which country ? I loved Baldur's Gate, but that does take me back...
I've watched your other drawings, it's funny but they remind me of the kind of art you would have seen in the underground comics of the 60s, some even look psychedelic to me. Do you draw professionnaly ? You should really do comics, I think you've got a keen eye for composition and design (that I don't have) and seem eager to share about your universe, that would be perfect for you.

              I'm Norwegian!

Baldur's Gate is definitely one of my earliest influencers, before I even got into the art scene. I'm by no means a professional at all, and while I have tried to do comics before I never really find a way to tell a story coherently. I think my universe is a little bit too vast, and therefore it is difficult to write properly for the characters in order to avoid plotholes and such.

I think the most interesting thing in art is to write for characters though, and the character gallery just keeps expanding to the point where it's way beyond bloated... although I somehow manage to find a use for all of them, if you know what I mean. It's frustrating at times, but it's always a ton of fun to have a "headworld" (if I can even call it that) to share online! <:

Thank you for the kind words tho', they mean a lot. I think I'd do art full-time to get even better at it, were it not for the fact that I have a job that takes up quite a lot of my time. Art is more of a hobby to me, a way to get in touch with likeminded individuals and so on. C:

Hey, that's cool, Norway is a beautiful country (they've got great metal bands too) !
I know that when you want to tell a story from a well developped universe you have to cut through some fat and leave a lot on the side and it can be heartbreaking. Storytelling is an art as well. And sadly there is a lot of great artists who can't live of their art so it's good to see you've got a mean to pay the bills !
Anyway, I hope to see more of your art soon !

Thank you! I will try to produce as much as my job allows me to!

And yes, we are pretty metal up here~! Sweden has some great ones too, so we're like one giant metal-producing conglomerate. <: !
