A Dash of Demons

Chapter 1: A Start of Something New

Arcane energy swirled through the air, crackling and whining as the energies, both sympathetic and contradictory, were forced together into a black cauldron.  Slender feminine hands covered in twilight fur danced like a conductor gathering and compressing the energy into an ever tighter and tighter space. Despite her lithe form the wolf woman commanded massive compressive forces against the arcana she had gathered, her blind eyes had no trouble seeing the power she wielded.  With a wave of her arms, she pulled more in from her surroundings, some normal and some more experimental.

The plants in one corner of her roofless lair fed her the energies of natural growth, the compost pile in the other side fed in energies of rot.

The third corner held what was, at one point, a barbecue that she was using as a flame holder to draw on for the wild energies of the fire.

The light of the moon above provided a fourth source and the will of her own mind a fifth.

Normally those would be the five sources she had access to, drawing from more than one or two at once was already a bit of a feat, to draw from all five took serious practice, to invent and use a sixth as well was uncharted territory.

The final corner of the room held a haphazard pile of wires, aluminum boxes, and monitors.  It had been a computer, now it was a focus powered by a solar battery.  The purely unnatural artifice of modern tech had an energy of its own she had found, one that witches of the past, even her mistress, had never even noticed existed due to the focus on natural forces.  Once she had noticed it, she needed to master it too, something strange and new that she would be the first to draw and merge with the others.

When she had forced all six elemental forces together small enough it erupted into a incandescently blinding white and purple flame.  Her cauldron strained against the forces inside trying to rip it apart.  She felt a smile spread across her muzzle, revealing the fangs on her wolfen face.  Her hair and skin began to glow with her elation, a feature unique to her, that quickly filled the room with a strong blue light that her blind eyes couldn’t appreciate.

She had her new mix of powers, now she just needed to figure out how to use it.  Would it be a chaotic mess? or allow for new varieties of spells that even she hadn’t ever considered before?  She prepared to buckle down to focus on what she had made, to learn all she could and unlock the new secrets.  Her focus was absolute, nothing could distract her.

Until a firm hand gripped onto her rear though her back dress.

With a sharp yelp the witch practically jumped out of her skin, and did jump into the air.  The energy rapidly destabilized and erupted skyward in a pillar of violent flames lighting up the night sky for a long movement before going dark.

“GOD DAMN IT KATE!!” The witch shouted.  Then ‘oofed’ when she was pulled backwards and hugged from behind.

“Hey hey inky” a voice from behind her cooed, “Having fun, are you?”

‘Inky’ or rather In-Ka, pouted a bit in her girlfriend’s arms, ears dropping to the side as the larger woman kissed her on the forehead.

“I was in the middle of research!” In-ka pouted, “You can’t even leave me alone for a couple hours, can you Kate”

“HA” Kate laughed and hogged tighter, “Its almost 5 am, you’ve been out here all night and we both know sunrise would have fucked your experiment over just as much as your booty”

In-ka squirmed as the hand once again goosed her butt.  In-ka wanted to shout again, but instead she just deflated; Kate was right of course.  She may be far from as powerful of a witch as In-ka herself was, but she was hardly incompetent, and sunrise really would have changed In-Ka’s experiment quite a bit.  Eventually In-ka sighed and responded, “I suppose you have a point…. Are you planning on letting me go?”

“Nope!” Kate chirped, “Besides once you relax for a moment you’ll realize how tired you are, and as the only one of us to sleep last night, I’ll have to carry you home.”

“That’s not true, I’m not that…” In-ka trained off as she felt the brain fog of fatigue step in, “Dammit. How do you always know?”

“Because I love you, you little doof.” Kate said.

“love you too…” In-ka said, putting up no resistance as she was gathered up in her girlfriends arms.  She felt a small pang of jealousy for Kate’s strength.  For the larger woman, it was basically nothing to carry In-ka’s own petite form.  Sergals were like that though.  A species that originally came here through a violent war of conquest, hundreds of years ago, were now much more commonplace.  They were however almost all over 6 feet tall including the women, and Kate at 6 foot 7 was no exception.   In-ka, who’s height started with a 5 and she had little interest in sharing the second number, looked almost like a child in her significant other’s arms despite them being about the same age.  That said, being carried was kind of nice, so she leaned her head against her girl’s chest and decided to get some shut eye for the walk back to the house.

In-ka woke up tucked into bed.  She must have been rather tired to have fallen entirely asleep just on the walk back to the house, half mile in the woods or not.  She stretched and sat up letting the covers fall away, shivering for a moment as she felt cooler air brush over her chest, followed by the warm noonday sun shining in from the windows.  She glanced down instinctively, even though ‘glancing’ meant little to her, realizing that Kate must have undressed her before tucking her in.  In-ka briefly wondered if Kate had taken the opportunity to cop a feel while she was out, then smirked to herself, after all she would have too.

Tossing the covers off entirely she focused for a moment and flashed her bioluminescent blow as bright as it went illuminating the room.  Even though she couldn’t ‘see’ the light she could feel its refraction through her fur, almost like a natural LIDAR detection. Having gotten a good look at the room she set about dressing herself before staggering downstairs for her 1PM breakfast.

“Heya sleeping beauty” Kate said from the living room as In-ka sat down at the kitchen table with a plate of bacon, “You really crashed there you know.”
“mmmm” In-ka murmured trying not to nod off into her breakfast and took a bite.

Kate went back to watching cartoons for the next 15 minutes or so letting In-Ka finish her food and deposit the plate in the sink before commenting again.  “You should wake up soon you know.  Or someone will wake you up.”

“Like you?” In-ka murmured.

“Nope. Him” Kate said, nodding at the form approaching from behind In-ka.

In-ka didn’t see the nod but felt the presence just before she went flying into the air wrapped up in a big bear hug of her adoptive dire-wolf father.
“Gah, Dad!” In-ka squirmed, “You, snuck up on me?!”

“That so surprising? Not like you have eyes on the back of your head, or the front” Dr. Dillon Lowell joked with his daughter.
“Har har” In-ka said, “Not that I’m not happy to see you, but why are y….”

“Baby!!!” The booming voice of the equally huge Dr. Tiffany Lowell, In-ka’s adoptive mother, and Tigress with a gym membership, rang out, “We’re here to help you get all set up!”

Kate was happy in the living room, though she knew she was probably next.  The doctors’ Lowell were some of the few other people around who could actually look down on her in a literal sense.  Both where almost as tall as Kate’s own father, Marcus, and that was saying something.  They had also at first been fairly distrustful of their daughter dating a sergal and made their opinions, their very intimidating opinions, clear.  Since then though they had warmed up quite a lot, and Kate went from being subjected to withering glares from walls of muscle that made even her feel tiny, to being entrapped in vice-like hugs from said same walls of muscle whenever they visited.  She would be next in their sights after their daughter, but for now she just got to watch In-ka get tossed around.

In-ka squirmed as she was launched from the arms of her father to the arms of her mother for another bearhug, “Ah… set up for…?”
“For College of course.” Tiffany said.

“oh”

In-ka had totally forgot, she had been so focused on her research into her spellcasting these last few months that she had forgotten. She and Kate had been accepted to the same college and had sprung for a small apartment near campus rather than the dorms, but the work of packing and moving had yet to be accomplished.  So, here she was, still barely fully awake after her long night, and would be spending the rest of the day packing boxes.

In-ka just groaned. Why’d college have to pick today to happen?
