The Scientist by Moogle (critique requested)

The Scientist (critique requested)

Moogle

My side of a trade I did with InsaneJoker awhile back of her character, Gretel. I need to colour like this more often, I really liked how this came out. Late thanks to Caelan for teaching me how to paint & giving me a number of tips to apply. I wouldn't have been able to do this without ya! :)

Critique's always appreciated, especially on paintings since I'm still relatively new to doing them (& colouring altogether, ehe XD).

Oh my, if you're new to this then I think you've done a fantastic job here! Really love that brush you used to create the edges on the background. :3 Now, I think that the direction of the light source in this work is a tad vague. For the most part, it seems to be emanating from the piece of paper on the table - however, the highlights that are reflected in her eyes imply that the light source is further in front of her than where the paper's at. If the light was supposed to come from the paper, then the reflection within her eyes should be at the very bottom and wrapping around her pupils in a U like fashion instead of just a circle in the corner.

Another thing that gives it away is the shading on the arms. More so her actual left arm (right arm, from our point of view). The darker part of that arm tells us that the main light source is coming from directly in front (and/or slightly above) of her, yet a good majority of the highlights from the beaker, books, etc. tell of a different location.

That said, I still think this is an amazing piece, especially since you're just starting out! I've yet to be able to properly color drawings myself, so I think you're progressing really well. :3

Ah! I always get way too carried away with the highlights! XDD I didn't even notice the eyes & the arm, haha. :P Thank you so much for pointing those out & your kind words. The main source of light was definitely from the middle/paper, so I'm glad that showed a bit. I'll be sure to keep your suggestions in mind next time I do another piece! :D~

It's alright!~ I imagine you just couldn't help yourself as you were in the creative zone and trying out new tips and tricks. XP But anyway, you're very welcome! I try to help out others when I can. :3
