Don't wanna be a REZQ operative? There are all kinds of crappy deep space jobs. Maybe your character could work for Niltraki Developments, testing their vacuum cutters. Maybe they're Entemophagy Support Operatives (bug farmers producing insects for protein meal). Maybe they work taking tech support calls from people whose FTL drives won't stop making blind jumps, ever-increasing the possibility of jumping into a star. Maybe they work manufacturing the precursor chemicals for PHOME. Maybe they don't work at all, and are in the microscopic minority who actually make money from this whole system.
