Two test pulls for semi-toony dragon

mirepoix

I popped my mold open a while ago and slushed out a couple of test pulls! The white is my master pull and the red is for testing hinge placement, etc. Hopefully it'll be mine for keeps, but it's a little thin around the edges. The eyes are a temporary setting, of course. Resin is 65D from Smooth-On. Eyes are 2" acrylic cabochons from my local TAP plastics. Big! But I wanted 'em big and happy. The white gunk all over the red mask is just plaster drips from a different project.

Turned out pretty good! The allowance I made for the hinge mechanism is completely wrong; I'm going to have to mount it about an inch further forward than I was expecting. Check out the difference in the edges of the mask between the white mask (completely uncut) and red mask (cut so that it doesn't collide with my ears). Hey at least I'm having to cut away material instead of adding it! I'll be adding fun spikely bits in that area later, so I'm not bummed out about cutting away my texturing.

My silicone ripped when I was de-molding my first pull inside the nostrils. It was a Mold Max Stroke mold, because I've had iffy lucky with platinum cure silcoone lately. Maaaan I've never had that happen with Rebound! I'm just going to use that next time and hope that my sticky silicone curse has been lifted. Because it ripped in the nostrils, the red pull looked like the nostrils were full of boogers. Oh well, that area gets cut out anyway. There are a couple small bubbles in the silicone that leave tiny bumps on the casts, but they are easy to trim off. The symmetry isn't perfect, but I'm happy enough with it. The jaw looks a little thinner on one side when you're looking at it straight on, but when it's moving nobody's going to be able to tell. Vision is GREAT!

If anybody has any questions about my casting process I'm more than welcome to talk about it. I used a combination of Mold Max STROKE and Mold Max 15 T for my silicone layer. I ran out before I could schlop thickened silicone into the undercuts, so I had to mix up some Oogoo. Really interesting stuff! I wouldn't make a big mold with it because it isn't very stretchy, but it saved my ass. My jacket mold was made with polyester resin and fiberglass. Fiberglass is a real endeavor but it's way lighter than ultra-cal and a lot cheaper than Plasti-Paste..

some sculpting WIPs on my Fur Affinity (I don't think I will be transferring them to my Weasyl.)
