Gerardo Guevara is arguably the most significant and neglected Ecuadorean composer in his country's history.
A pupil of Nadia Boulanger, Guevara's music provides a rich combination of European and native Ecuadorean
styles, and contemporary techniques. As Ecuador's preeminent composer, Guevara's output encompasses a wide variety of genres from ballet (Yaguar Shungo), orchestra suites (Ecuador), art song (Combate Poético) and experiments upon native forms such as pasillos and yaravis. His pasillo Despedida is a perfect example of his use of folkloric elements in the composition of spanish art song, taking advantage of the deeply melancholic nature of the genre to create subtle shades of melancholy
Farewell, my love,
Farewell, my life,
I leave with you this song of love
And with it, my entire life.
My eyes will weep
for your dark eyes,
My lips will suffer
The absence of your kisses.
And I will go on living,
And I will live dreaming,
And I shall dream of the kiss
That will reunite us.
Farewell my love,
I'll carry you in my soul,
I leave with you this song love
And with it, my entire life.
