Portrait of a Hero?!

Another character who randomly popped up into my head. I originally drew him on "Colors! 3DS" back in October and started on the final version you see here then as well, but it took me so long to finish this because I'm not happy with pose or composition here. I decided to just do it anyway and try for something more spectacular next time. I'm starting to feel like I'd rather spend my time designing and coloring characters instead of fussing over full pieces of art... maybe it's time to change gears then? :)

Anyway, his story:

Growing up with a name like Dick Richardson is tough on a kid. It's even tougher when you're some kind of alien space chicken with a social disorder. All the teasing got to little Dick's head, so every night as he lay in his bed, staring up at his shelves of rocket ship models and the glowing stars stuck to his ceiling, he dreamed of ways to get even with the world. Then it hit him:

He should become a space pirate! Then everyone would fear and respect him!

As soon as he graduated, he changed his name to Rich Victor and started his own gang. Unfortunately, the only thing that Victor had as reference for designing space pirate costumes was his old superhero comics. Ultimately his costumes looked so much like superhero clothes that everyone mistook him and his gang for heroic vigilantes, and his golden vulture emblem for a phoenix. At first Victor viciously protested the idea, but he soon realized that, by playing the hero, he could get more praise and admiration than he'd ever dreamed of.

Though, I should note that, even though Victor and his gang were capable people, they weren't very good at what they did in the beginning, and for a while, they earned more praise and admiration from the criminals who consistently escaped them. But over time, Victor learned how to play the hero well, and he earned the respect he deserved - from the children who watched his cartoon show every weekend and dreamed of one day becoming something greater than themselves.
