I'm not sure if it's what you're going for or not, but it feels like an oil-painting... like what you'd find in a museum? I like how everything sticks to the same style and it blends in well. It feels "old" which seems pretty awesome to me! The only thing I can point out, is for most of the picture it feels like there's no lines then I see an area (like raised hoof, and on the right neck-shoulder) where you can see the line-art more than other places.
I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be like that or not so went googling for the image you mentioned to compare, and you did an excellent job of replicating it with a new character ^,^ Though they are two different "people" they still have the same over-all vibe and flow.

Oh hey, this is for Chris Oatley's class, right? I think it came out really well! The colors in particular are really nice and harmonious. I like your selection of portrait/animal too, it just works!
