Supercell thunderstorms are a special kind of single cell thunderstorm that can persist for many hours. They are characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft.
Digital editing to attempt to show off this piece as it is in reality was a major pain in the ass, and this is as close as I could get without sacrificing even more of the image...ugh.
I achieved the coloration in the middle by lighting a scrap piece of illustration board on fire (had no matches or a lighter, so I used one of the burners on my stove top) and putting the flaming paper against the board that you see in the image on this page.
