Già nel Pentamerone si cita questa apparizione, che va per le stanze di notte, porta incubi o causa i colpi di fortuna. Nell’Ottocento Matilde Serao trascrive una leggenda che lo identifica nel figlio deforme di una nobildonna non maritata, aggiungendo dettagli macabri e tragici. Inoltre Roberto de Simone rende lui l’aiutante magico della sua "Gatta Cenerentola", che dona (al posto delle fate) alla protagonista dell’opera teatrale un abito per andare al ballo del re.

In the Nineteenth Century Matilde Serao wrote down a legend that saw in this spirit the deformed son of an unmarried noble woman, adding both macabre and tragic details. Roberto de Simone on the other hand made him the little helper of his "Cinderella the Cat", who is aided by a goblin (instead of the fairies) in getting to the ball in a pretty dress.
