The Day the World Burned

Lyrak

The dry season had been terrible that year. No rain, no relief, and now the stormclouds had mocked them. Not a single drop of water had fallen from the sky, only lightning. Now the grass had been set ablaze, and two lions were running as fast as they could toward the center of their pride's land, having seen the orange glow on the horizon.

"Hurry up, lad! If we run we can make it to the dens before the fire does." Kijivu's voice was calm and strong, but his heart was pounding. If they didn't make it in time to warn the mothers and cubs... he didn't want to think of it. Mjukuu looked panicked beside him. The boy was so young... still too young to be a king on his own. But his father had died early, leaving Kijivu to care for the boy. This was the lad's first real test of character.

"Gramps, it's swallowing everything. Is there anyone out hunting right now?"

Kijivu went quiet for a couple of steps as they neared the last remaining watering hole on pride ground. The fire was headed straight for the dens, and they were running straight for it. He might be able to shout a warning in time for everyone to get out, if he could only get close enough. But there was still too much risk. The boy still had his whole life ahead of them. "Good thinkin' lad. You swing back 'round, go warn the huntresses. I'll get everyone out of the dens. Go!"

Mjukuu started to turn, looked like he was going to follow his grandfather's order, but he had closed his eyes, seeming to steel himself. Suddenly he was slamming into Kijivu, knocking him down into the damp earth at the water's edge, and the old lion's world went black.

"Sorry, Gramps," said the younger lion sadly as he willed more speed into his legs. "I already lost Dad. I'm not losing you too."

This is one I've had drawn for ages and just FINALLY finished. The colors on Kijivu aren't quite right - it should be a bit warmer a gray - but still this gives you an idea. I had been toying with the idea of a Lion King OC for a while, and somehow this guy kept showing up in my doodles so I wrote a little backstory for him.
