Willis Wheeler (2015) by LordDominic

Willis Wheeler (2015)

LordDominic

2015 art. Yet another "creative itch" sort of drawing, I wanted to try my hand at a character with a physical disability. Initial reception was mixed, but I like him as a character enough to post art of him here.

Even though I never really did very much with him art-wise, I did have numerous ideas involving him that I never actually got around to illustrating. One was the concept of him adopting a bomb-sniffer dog (or similar service animal) that had also been injured, and was perhaps missing a limb or an eye or something.

And yes, his name was cruelly ironic, but at the same time I like the ring it has and it matches the alliteration naming scheme most of my other canine soldier characters have, so I'm not changing it now.

Description from the original submission page:

"The name 'Wheeler' comes to mind but that's not a good name to give a character in a wheelchair."
-LordDominic, August 2015

"F***\, that name stuck, it'll be his last name I guess."
-LordDominic, 3 hours later.

I'm still developing him but he's a disabled soldier, paralyzed from the waist down after taking a few bullets to the back in a firefight. Not every character I create has a life that's nothing but sunshine, rainbows and silly underwear. Now he's pretty much reliant on that chair to get around, but although he looks rather unhappy here, it's not holding him back too badly all things considered.
He's just got a cruelly ironic last name I guess, because the universe hates him. I like him though so he'll be sticking around.
