S.A.A. #1

Ashley was from Paramaribo, but this summer she was staying in the Netherlands, where she went to college. The Supernatural Ability Academy of Western Europe wasn't among the most prestigious superhero schools in the world, but it was among the most stable, which was an accomplishment in itself.

The campus was along a river and a hill. The three separate areas of the campus - lower, upper, and across the river - were historically used for different academic pursuits, but nowadays they just put stuff wherever they had room.

"What are you doing up there?"

Ashley looked down from her perch on top of the education building to see her friend Nicolas riding a very small dinosaur.

"I would answer that," Ashley said, "but now that I see you on a tiny green dinosaur I think that has to be the topic of conversation."

"Really?" Nicolas asked. "This is a superhero college. There must be more supernatural creatures around here than Americans." Nicolas was from Missouri, and his superpower was, more or less, bringing inanimate objects to life.

"Where do you get a dinosaur?" Ashley asked.

"It was the first thing I ever rode on. It used to be outside a gas station, actually."

"How'd you get it to Europe?"

Nicolas shrugged. "I have connections."

A clanging sound came from inside the building.

"Is that robots?" Ashley asked.

"Like the zombie robots from before?" said Nicolas. "Probably, yeah."

"I'll go take care of them."

Ashley stood up and started creating force fields, two at a time. She placed them under her feet and ran in a circle around the building to the third story patio. She jogged just quickly enough that she could get through before they started to fall under her weight. Her force fields could keep something from going through, but they weren't entirely immune to gravity.

"You gonna blow all the robots up?" Nicolas asked excitedly.

"Nah," Ashley said. "I'm just gonna slash them to bits. I'm not the Bonaire Bomb after all."

"Who?"

"He was a superhero in Bonaire. It's in the Caribbean Netherlands. Basically just blew stuff up? Ah, nevermind. I'm cooler than him."

Ashley threw open the door to the patio and went inside.

"Geez. I gotta go to class." Nicolas looked at his watch. "Wish it was in this building. Then I could have gotten some time off."

I think when I try to write something, I get intimidated by the empty page. Maybe that's why it helps me to write using the FreeDOS text editor - just about 20 lines and 78 columns visible at once. I installed DOS on a bootable USB stick last month.
