Trapped in the video game

lizard-socks

After the discovery of magic, video game technology is more immersive than ever before, but it's not always safe. Kids are becoming trapped in a video game from the early 90s, finding themselves transformed into dungeon bosses with no way to escape. Yusei, the game's developer, and Sabina, a worried mom, have made it their mission to rescue them.

Because the game thinks that Lisa (slug), Julie (ghost bat), and Kosuke (mainframe robot) are monsters, they're trapped in the room until someone defeats them in battle and makes them respawn at the standard starting point (the protagonist's bedroom). Unfortunately, they also can't stop themselves from fighting back if attacked. Sabina and Yusei are forced to fight these kids in order to save them.

Unlike the other characters, Yusei (bee) and Sabina (land dragon) are assigned to sprites in a map-specific region of the game's RAM, so when they enter a town they turn back into humans. This allows them flexibility that none of the kids have.

Paralari was the game's tutorial character, but this version of her is actually Sabina's son Tyler, who subjected himself to a magical curse so he could forget about being trapped in the game, unable to talk to his family. Because she has Tyler's soul, she's able to do things Yusei never programmed her to do, like take initiative and fight enemies.

The game was never programmed to update its save data after the player beat the final boss like modern video games do, so Sabina, Yusei, and the kids need to find another way to escape.
