What is it ? Another bad pun ? Naaaah, it's a serious one~ I wanted to make this kind of stuff since a while, many people asked me how I proceed when I draw so here's how I usually draw.

  1. Sketching: Sketching is one of the most important part of an artwork, it's give you the rough idea of where you want your element to be, even if it's seems like a pretty clean sketch I drew a SKELETON first to decide of a proper poses for the characters and the good proportions as well.

  2. Lining: When I line I try to avoid using the same width everywhere, I then to make it larger in strategical point. In this drawing, the huge plain back area is placed on a different layer to avoid making mess when I color the lineart at the end.

3: Flat Color: Here we decide which color to pick for our character, I used those from the original sprite and alterate it a bit to make it more pleasant to look at. I hightly recommand to avoid pure back.

  1. Base Shading: Some of you might have heard of it, but for those who don't know there's two type of shadow. This one is the area that the light source can't touch. I usually use the multiply tool and depending of the ambiance I want to give the drawing I use either warm or cold color. For this one I used violet and pink. I recommend to avoid pure grey and black since it give a platonic rendering to and artwork. Using color give more life to it.

  2. Lighting: For this step I put a few highlight where I wanted the color to get brighter. I usually use the luminosity tool on sai and depending of the shading color I use a color that match it. Since the shading of this artwork is mostly violet I used a warm pink.

  3. Second shading: Remember when I say there's two type of shadow ? Well the second one is the shadow casted by the 'object' itself. So I usually use the darkest color of I used for my base shading and place the second shading in important area where the shading should be cast due to the light source.

  4. Details: Finition is really important here ! Even if you follow all the steps there's something that seems off to me.

  • I really HATE using pure white for my drawings ( thanks to my color class I had a few years back). So I usually color the lineart by locking the opacity of my layer.

  • Then I give textures to my drawing with an overlay layer of the same color of my light source, here I especially used it for the slippers, the fur on the coat and Papyrus's outfit.

  • And for the final touch, I put a layer over all of them and add 'reflection' color on the whole drawing, really bright color, like the red and blue here, reflect on the other area near them.

I really hope you find my tu-TORIEL usefull, I might make more in the future as well~ Thank you for being so supportive !
