Carpenter Bee by LittleGrayTiger

Carpenter Bee

LittleGrayTiger

I got a bee in my bonnet so to speak, so tonight I painted an anthro (Or would it be zoomorphic?) carpenter bee. Specifically a male Eastern Carpenter Bee, but you can't see his face from this angle. Carpenter bees lack stripes and their butts are mostly hairless, resulting in a shiny rear. The easy way to pick them out is by the little black bald spot in their thorax amidst the luxurious fuzz. I took the colors from several reference photos, but it's worth noting that their blue color was mostly reflected light and that carpenter bees are not actually deep shiny blue.

It was an interesting exercise in making something stylized and fictional from references, including the color itself. I only wish the scanner hadn't eaten color itself, the yellow furry areas are not so dull+flat while the blues aren't so saturated. I color corrected as best I presently know how. So if anyone knows a good flatbed scanner for watercolor and acrylic paintings, I'm all ears. Brush pen, watercolor, a bit of acrylic, and a teeny bit of black colored pencil.
