"Looking over his shoulder, the forest seemed to close up behind him . . . there was no path, no road, no sign of where he had been or where he should go. There were only dying trees and darkness. For a short moment he was afraid, confused, but that fear and uncertainty was quickly replaced with sadness, which was then replaced by anger. The world was cruel, and he hated it.
. . .
The horse started moving again without command, turning to one side and passing between two pines . . . Returning his attention to his surroundings, the lord was surprised to find himself once more on the road . . . [It] was a welcome sight. He let out a breath of relief, and his frustration subsided until it was all but gone."
