It's Time Things Changed

Lauralien

(Naerina, aged 10, accompanied by Arkenetash and Arshaka. On her way out of the hospital after a battle with the Lurking Virus. I imagine her smile has been coaxed out by the telling of a groan-worthy joke.)

(Not pictured: The stool Naer had to stand on to get into the shot.)

Tribes are social organizations that have formed around a common factor, whether it be similar beliefs, family, status, etc. Arxyna is one of the few countries to offer official recognition of tribes, so most of them will headquarter themselves in its capital of Arxynoth, but many larger groups still have branches and followers all over the world.

*Most modern tribes have been founded within the last couple hundred years, and are based around one or two simple ideas (The Alurian equivalent to stamp-collecting, knitting, or model airplane building). Membership is generally easy to obtain. *

Two most ancient tribes, however - The Zandak and the Imbru-Ai - Can trace their roots back for thousands of years to the lands of Yredua and Bandysar, respectively. They are relatively exclusive tribes, and their ideals may appear a bit odd compared to the Nanotech Enthusiast meetings that your neighbor attends every other weekend.

The Zandak is the older of the two tribes, and was formed in Yredua when the species from which they took their namesake fell from the sky. The Zandak themselves integrated into the Alurian culture in the years following the event, and over the centuries, many of them followed the Yreduans that left their home to explore the many nations of the world. The Zandak still living in Arxyna (approximately 338,000 in number, or 0.05% of the population) are, for the most part, the same ones that left Yredua long ago. When their Alurian companions died, most of them elected to stay with their descendents. Thus, tribal membership and the Zandak themselves are passed down through Alurian bloodlines, many of which can still trace their history back to Yredua through hundreds or thousands of years.

The tribe aims to keep a friendly relationship with the Zandak, for mutual benefit. The Zandak are ridiculously loyal, and appreciate when they are allowed to participate in Alurian society, as they are a very small minority. The Alurian tribe members are naturally fascinated with the creatures, and a few hope that with time and cooperation, they can glean some of the old and powerful secrets that the Zandak are harboring.

Naerina is just happy to have them as guardians, mentors, and as friends.
