It shocked me the other day to realise I've had this guy in storage, undercoated black, for almost eight years. I put this Russ together toward the end of the Medusa V campaign and promptly forgot about it, where it's never quite been worth taking him or doing anything with him. Not any more! The Astra Militarum Codex says I can have Tank Commanders as an HQ choice? I have a Tank Commander as an HQ choice!
Still to finish are eyes and mouth on the commander - the head is a very recent swap for one of the spares I had left over from the amazing Militarum Tempestus Scions kit - and a few other minor tank details like periscopes, equipment, weathering and the like. The metallic detailing I'm particularly pleased with, and it's nothing more than Vallejo's Grey Black with a light drybrush of Necron Compound on the top, washed with Nuln Oil. Guess how I'll be doing all my heavy weapons from now on?
This is one of those cases where I'd drill out the gun barrels, except this is an old Russ kit - the heavy bolter sponsons can't be drilled since that shit's structural!
Parts of this Guard army fought in more than fifty recorded battles for the campaign! I still insist they're referred to by the honourific they're entitled to: Knights of Medusa. XD
The problem was really one of time investment. I was working for GW at the time, and while they're a lot of fun - really, the campaigns and winter events were some of everybody's favourite things to be doing at work - they don't usually see any return. It's a shame to have to take such a mercenary view of things, but when you're pretty much literally paying your staff to play with toy soldiers over the summer, any corporate body is going to give it a jaundiced eye.
The death knell for the summer campaign was the Warhammer Fantasy one the following year. Book of Grudges or some such? I don't even remember what it was called. Attendance, turnout and general interest was so poor that it actually cost more money in printing the promotional material than it ever saw back. A real shame. But, luckily, we've still got the option of gaming clubs and campaigns among friends. :)
