The documents a bunch of people shout about can be read:
USA Constitution
USA Declaration of Independence

Rather than celebrating the past, why not actually uphold the good values from these documents for the present & future people living in this country

"When the symbols become more important than the citizens, what are we celebrating?"
    Well said!
As a non-American, it's always been somewhat disturbing how fixated a lot of American are on their symbols as opposed to the values they supposedly represent, especially with the rah-rah-rah expressions of "patriotism" that come about at the drop of a (star-spangled) hat and how dare someone "disrespect" the flag by paying it less than full hand-on-heart adoration.

We certainly don't have anything like that in my country. Heck, we actually had a referendum a few years ago to change the flag (not that it got anywhere), and while I believe there's a "pledge of allegiance" for new citizens to make I wouldn't have the faintest idea as to what's in it because we don't feel the need for kids to recite it every day at at school to prove what patriots they are.

He aha te mea nui o te ao?
What is the most important thing in the world?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.

Ya, the USA teaches its citizens to want to fuck the flag at points because they love the idea of the country they think exists, it's very weird
