The theory that ceratopsians such as Styracosaurus used their frills for sexual display was first proposed in 1961 by Davitashvili. However, there is no firm evidence for sexual dimorphism (visual difference between males and females) in any ceratopsid, and the elaborate frill ornamentation may have been used as a means of species identification. Styracosaurus has long been depicted as a herding animal due in part to many remains being found in the Dinosaur Park Formation of Alberta. The congregation could also be indicative of non-herding animals gathering around a water source in a time of drought.
