Styracosaurus fossil remains were first collected in Alberta, Canada in 1913. Like all ceratopsians, the function(s) of its horns has been debated for many years. The crest on ceratopsians is called the parietosquamosal frill and the spike on each side of their cheeks is referred to as the jugal horn. Styracosaurus teeth were arranged in groups called batteries - older teeth on top were continually replaced by the teeth underneath them. Their mouths are thought to be highly adapted to shearing and plucking plant matter such as palms and ferns, but an omnivorous diet is also possible, considering meat is easier to digest than plant matter and even animals we think of as being purely herbivorous today (such as deer) engage in meat eating when the opportunity presents itself.
