Neverending Story: Gate of the Oracle (critique requested)

kikidoodle

If you're going to be in Anaheim this weekend, go check out the Neverending Fantasy gallery!! It will have tons of artwork available for purchase, as well as a card deck designed entirely based off of 80s fantasy films! This is my piece for the gallery.
A Little Known Shop
Saturday March 14th
6-10PM
423 S. Brookhurst St.

There is a run of 1/1 canvas prints of this piece being sold at A Little Known Shop tomorrow. It has gold leaf edges, and looks gorgeous in person :3!!

When I got accepted into the gallery I knew I wanted to do something for Neverending Story, which was dear to my childhood. This scene was so iconic and memorable, that I was glad to work on it!! It was difficult, though, as I quickly found out that you're limited in points of view to make the sphinx gate really READ as grand as it does in the movie.

I hope you enjoy! Please check out A Little Known Shop (soon to be Fan Alley) in the future, even if you don't get to go on Saturday. It's the CUTEST shop and the owner is an amazing lady!

This is beautiful. The little touches of asymmetry highlight the perfectly matched halves of the gate. The golden light seems to come from nowhere, which is perfect for the story. Beautiful work.

Thank you so much! I feel like it's really difficult doing artwork that requires intense symmetry... and the golden light was yanked right out of the movie version, where they seemed to randomly emit a glow! I loved the touch and tried to re-create it here. :3

Oh my ... this scene terrified me, as some others in this magnificient movie. That's also why I love it :3

When I saw the thumbnail to this, I immediately knew where it was from and had to click on it. Loved that movie when I was a kid and still do!

Wow, I can feel the heat radiating off those wings.
