new material experiment--acrylic inks

keirajo

This is gonna be a year for me to try new things. A couple of things I've seen browsing in the stores have been ink-based products. I can't yet afford a decent set of the alcohol inks (they're incredibly expensive--like $20 for a set of THREE!), but I was able to afford a basic set of acrylic inks.

Now, these are paint-style inks. It's very thick, it dries very thick. The instruction/tips guide that came with the basic set (red, yellow, green, blue, black, white) says it can be diluted--but it doesn't seem to mix well. I tried to mix some white with the colors to lighten them and it really wasn't lightening them all that much, even when the majority of the color was white with just a small bit of the color. The bad thing is the green, blue and black are all so dark and look SO MUCH ALIKE..........I bet you can't tell that I've actually used those three different colors, because it all looks black. XD

It also says you can use them for calligraphy, but I imagine you WILL have to dilute it for something like that or use extremely thick paper.

But it does have potential, if I can get a better set of colors than these basics or things. Here, to try out the consistency of the medium, I tried the "marbling" experiment the instruction/tips guide showed. Though "quick drying", it does have the acrylic quality of a "slight stickiness" when dry--so, if you're using this, make sure you know where you're going to store it or have a fixative to put on it.
