nature walk (colored) by keirajo

nature walk (colored)

keirajo

I think like a year or two ago I posted the lineart for this piece--not knowing when I'd ever get around to coloring it. Because...........multiple characters, background and all that. It's like 2 or 3 years old. XD

So, Jin taking the kids out for a walk in a part or something. :)

Pokemon belongs to Nintendo/GameFreak. OCs belong to me.

This is super cute! The expressions are wonderful and you did a great job on the piece!

      Thanks so much! :D

I'm still trying to get better at coloring my lineart digitally--I still have "over-the-line colorings" here and there, but I'm slowly improving on that! :)

It looks great! Out of curiosity (and you don't have to answer), what sort of style of colouring do you want to aim for for your pieces? I have a ton of resources to various art things, I'm happy to share if something fits what you want to do. (No hard feelings if you dont!)

          Thanks! :D

Kinda of a soft light-shade kind of thing. I want my stuff to look "different than the standard", which is either full on shading or celshading--so, it looks more unique and all. I had a blending brush in Manga Studio that I liked (watercolor brush), but the CLIP version of that blending brush doesn't seem to work the same way--so, I've been trying to experiment with the different blending tools in CLIP to see if I can find something that I like similar to the watercolor brush. I have to be really careful with the common "blend" tool, because I find I press too hard and "blend down to the paper", so to speak! XD I press hard with my pens, too--so, I think it's just the weight I use for drawing because of my occasional arthritis. chuckle

Since I can't color in lines (or draw them on the tablet--I import scanned handdrawn lineart), I usually do a lot of erasing in all the layers--as my eyes age, I don't always catch all the stuff I should have erased. It's kinda funny, though.....when I'm doing the piece in CLIP, it looks like I've gotten it all. So, I'm like "done"--then I upload it and a glaring overcolored line stands out for some reason. Whoops! XD

Oh no!! That stinks. Always a pain when updated software don't do the same thing that you wanted. (My tablet broke and i'm using an older one or borrowing a completely different device from my partner and it's so different!!! I can't seem to get the same results and it drives me up the wall. Waiting on my tablet to get repaired IF i can be.

LOL i press hard on my pens too. I'm being so gentle on my partners tablet device because i don't wanna scuff it or wreck something but HRNG. hehe.

I've not figured it out in clip, but in photoshop there's a quick and easy way to get only the inks from a traditional piece. I'm not sure if you have something like that or if you are manually selecting and erasing. Lemme know and i'll delve into it a little more and see if it works in clip. ^_^

There is almost always something off that i only notice after i post something haha., XD

Yeah, there are nice things CLIP can do over Manga Studio........but when tools have an all-new learning curve, it's a little maddening until you can figure it all out all over again. It so happened I had to get a new tablet, too.........or really, I'd had my Wacom Bamboo for several years, but the local Best Buy had a clearance sale and I bought a Wacom Intuos and held it stored in a closet in case the Bamboo ever broke--since many people I knew over on FA were going through Bamboo tablets like crazy, always complaining of them breaking. Shortly after I got this new laptop and everything last year.........I accidentally "yanked" the Bamboo off the table and when it hit the floor, something must've broke inside, because it wouldn't respond to the pen anymore, even though the light on it came on. So, good thing I had the Intuos! XD

It's funny, but the Intuos came with all these different kinds of pen-tips, like about 8 different tips and 3 normal ones. I don't think with my pressure on a pen that I'll be able to utilize those different tips for what a "pro" might, but at least I know I'll have pen-tips for awhile. chuckle

I figured out how to scan a piece and "eliminate" the paper on the lineart--it did take some trial and error, but if you import the scanned work, you can go into the editing options and choose "convert brightness to opacity".........it basically eliminates the white of the paper, giving you a clear layer with just the lineart! So, when I color, I color underneath my lineart layer, I just have to erase a little when I go over the lines. :)

You wonder why you only notice that once a piece is posted! XD There was one piece I posted of my Disgaea art and..........there was like a whole blank section on it. I remember staring at that as soon as it uploaded and did an immediate facepalm. Probably the most glaring mistake I've ever made.......... XD

              • Link

Aw maaaaaan. The poor Bamboo! Glad you had a backup for sure. Makes life easier haha. Oh!! Yeah the different nibs are interesting for sure. I never really used them outside of needing a replacement nor did I really find a different in them outside of some were harder on the screens than others but it didn't change my actual inking much, was just a feel of the pen sorta thing.

Oh that's good! That is a nice feature for sure! My photoshop way is a couple hot keys but it's enough that if you mess up the order you gotta undo everything and try again. XD Works though. I REALLY need to take some time to actually learn CSP, I've had it for so many years but since SAI is such a small program it runs better for me on my tablet. We will see how things go with replacing it.

I think it's because you get used to looking at it in the art program that things start to look "normal" even if they aren't. One of the big reasons i hear folks say take a break/sleep on it because calling it done. When you upload it to a site, the surrounding parts are totally different so your brain goes "oh this looks different" and then see's it all. What a pain haha.

                • Link

Yeah, but I'll admit, my Bamboo lasted much longer for me than most of the other people who had them and used theirs. I guess because I love tech (though I am not good with it--giant robots are one of my fave things! XD), it loves me back. My previous laptop lasted a really long time, like nearly 10 years--I remember when it died, I took it to a computer place and asked if they could salvage my hard drive and the guy looked at my laptop like it was a fossil from an ancient world. XD I actually do still have a desktop running Windows XP that works fairly decently........at least when I last used it a year ago.

CLIP is pretty nice, I know some artists here who have switched from SAI to CLIP. I know it sometimes can cause slowdown with all its bells and whistles. But one day, if you get more room or technology, give it a shot--it's a nice program and a lot of pro artists have moved towards using it. :)

Yeah, it's easy to get so excited about finishing something and then you realize you miss it when you upload it! XD

                  • Link

Dang you are lucky in that regard! I seem to have either a really good time or a REALLY BAD time with no inbetweens. Some devices are like "yeah, we're cool" and some are nothing but trouble the moment i get them when everyone else i know is fine with them. XD

Yeah i've had CSP for years. I've used it a few times and i've certainly cracked it open to make use of some of their great effect brushes but the only device i have that will run it decently is my desktop and i try really hard not to sit at that desk when drawing if i can help it as it's not very ergonomic and there isn't much i can do about it. I have a small standing desk that i use with my tablets so i'm not sitting all day but with my tablet being broken my usual setup has been lost for now. We will see what happens.

                    • Link

I think my technology knows that I love it--so, it works hard for me. chuckle I have a lot of things that still work (I have a working Atari 2600 console from the 80's, still!) and people are like "you're kidding?!" XD

Standing desks are a big deal now! The Library I work at, our technical services department--since they use computers all day long to input things, they got standing desks last year. They're pretty neat--ergonomic, of course--and they have moveable shelves on them so that the staff can sit down and use them or stand up and use them as they feel they need to. The shelves move with like the pressure-air thing that office chairs have, so they can put the shelves (keyboard and monitor) at the levels that are most comfortable for them. Hopefully when you get your tablet back, you can get your setup back to "normal". :)

                      • Link

Holy heck! I'm surprised the parts are still functioning even with the best care! That's amazing!

Oh yes! I love the ones you can move around, though mine is static at one position. Though my desktop computer is a few steps away so i can just sit down over there and take a break if i need to. It works well enough. :)

Thanks! Me too. My brain is going a little crazy handling the reduced output and feeling bad about being behind, but my clients are wonderful understanding folks so that's been a blessing.

                        • Link

The joysticks, of course, don't work (those broke all the time anyways), but a friend of mine taught me that the Sega Genesis controller works in the Atari 2600--the port is exactly the same! You use the D-pad to move and the start button to fire. So, really pretty cool! :D Of course, I had to keep an old antenna-connection television to be able to play it on, as well. XD

It's still a pretty good deal, if you primarily use a portable computer like a laptop anyways. I'm glad it works out for you, for the most part, as it needs to! :)

Yeah, I get that feeling. Sometimes you can't help the curve balls that life throws at you, that's for sure! Hopefully when you get it back, you'll be able to easily get back into the swing of things--without too much stressing out. :)

                          • Link

That's awesome! I think the oldest console I ever had was the original nintendo. I don't have it anymore because my mother decided to sell it on me when I was a young-un, which stunk. I have 100% dug out my old playstation 1 and plugged it in to play games from that era though, which is fun to do.

Yeah, i have the desk setup with an external monitor since the desk is still a smidge to low for me so i crook my neck a lot. External monitor helps me look straight ahead more so i'm not messing up my back. It's a little awkward right now as I had to find cables that were long enough to plug into the desktop computer while i wait for a fix or replacement tablet PC @.@ (I have an old intuos 3 with a long enough cable sitting on the desk, but it's setup is no where near my other tablet so i'm having a hard time getting the same quality of lines. forever tweaking the software to find something remotely similar... So i've borrowed my partners tablet PC. It's still not the same, but closer so i can at least work. XD )

I hope so. It's been a time trying to organize everything with the pandemic. XD

                            • Link

I do that with my Dreamcast, every year--I break it out on 9-9 and play for a couple hours. The original Dreamcast release was 9-9-99, so it was very memorable.......probably the first console I ever actually preordered and waited in line to get (took the day off of work!). It's always fun to play retro games like that, I often like to break out my Saturn and play "Burning Rangers" or "Panzer Dragoon Saga". :)

At least you can do a little work--just don't stress out too much and get plenty of rest! :)

I hear that. Since I'd gotten laid off for 2 months during the pandemic........it was hard to focus on doing anything for myself. I cleaned a lot, but I had no heart for artwork or reading or writing. I spent more time worrying about if I'd ever go back to work. Of course, now that I'm back at work, I have all that wonderful motivation again and no time! XD

Hehe, i do love those times playing old games. Nostalgia days are fun!

I'm doing the best I can to balance everything. I've got online events every month till the end of the year, 2 of which i help run and all I'll be "vending" at, so I've got work to do there which, timing wise, has worked out while I can't art as much. :)

I'm glad you have work again! I totally understand that motivation and time paradox. It's strangely common!!

They are! :D Nintendo's putting out a Switch compilation of the classic Mario games for the 35th anniversary--I'm considering getting that, since I never had an original NES or SNES! :)

Your hard work will pay off, even if you can't "art" for a little while! But it'll give you time for ideas while you're doing the work for the events--and sometimes having ideas waiting for you is just as good as getting something "down on paper" right away. :D

I'm so glad to be back at work, too. There was so much worry and we were recalled by seniority--I'm somewhere in the middle of the seniority list, so it could've been a gamble. But I got called back and some people below me did not, so I was very lucky as well. I've worked at the Library for nearly 30 years--it would've been hard to have lost that job, I can't really imagine being anywhere else. chuckle

                                  • Link

Ooooh I should look into that. I don't buy new games very often but there are a couple on my list if i can afford them. Mario was my jam on the NES. I never ended up with a SNES but lots of my friends did so i got to play on theirs sometimes. Would be fun to have access to those games gain.

I'm currently waiting for Crash Bandicoot 4 to come out. I was meaning to preorder it but it just didn't happen. XD

Oh totally! I always have a sketchbook around so i've been jotting down ideas and little thumbnails. ^_^

Heck. I bet! The uncertainty is really rough! I'm glad you got it back! :D

                                    • Link

I'm really glad to see Nintendo putting love into the Switch after their lackluster support of the WiiU. I had mostly Sega systems growing up (besides my Atari 2600), but Mario games were always a blast to play. It'll be nice to have a single collection of all the greats. They're even doing a collection of some "1st 3-D adventures" together......."Super Mario 64", "Super Mario Sunshine" and "Super Mario Galaxy"--that may be worth getting since I've never played "Super Mario 64". :)

I totally know what you mean--the pandemic stopped me from pre-ordering games like I used to. I browsed GameStop when I was checking to see if "RPG Maker MV" was still coming out on the 8th (after like a year's delay!) and I was surprised at all the games that've come out that I probably would've pre-ordered before! XD

The usefulness of sketchbooks will always be necessary! :D

Me too. I love my job and I'm glad to be back! :D

Heck yeah! I'll have to look into those too. The switch is the only Nintendo product we own at the moment so cashing in to get some nostalgia content we can't get elsewhere is so tempting!

Oh yes. I never go anywhere without something i can sketch on!

                                        • Link

I'm proud of Nintendo for doing this--to get all this classic content out, not just for the anniversary, but to get content to people who've never played the games before! Especially young people. I'm really pleased with the Switch's design and capabilities--though I've really only used it in handheld mode mostly. It's the most adaptable system and is probably one of the most powerful handheld device out there right now, for gaming. :D

                                          Yeah! :D

                                          • Link

I quite like it! We've used it as handheld but also on the TV as well. Both work great in my experience. I use it handheld a lot of Animal Crossing when i'm taking a break from other stuff haha. It's quite nice!

I admit, I was thrilled that "Disgaea 5" was ported to it--I love playing the Disgaea games in portable form more than the console versions. chuckle

                                              • Link

I've only see a little bit of those games but it's nice they are really expanding what's available on the switch ^_^

                                                • Link

I think Nintendo's got a good thing on their hands--even while the upcoming systems focus on VR gear and such, I think having this good and adaptable little system that Nintendo's given us might be stronger than a super-system relying on VR. :)

NiS has been really great about putting tons of their games out on the Switch so far--their games are always so quirky and fun "Disgaea 2" and "Disgaea 5" are my faves of that NiS series, but I recently gave "LapisXLabyrinth" a try and that game has such freakingly adorable sprites and it's only semi-RPG, but more focus on a classic platforming aspect......which made it a blast to play! :D

                                                  • Link

Totally agree! I haven't delved into VR much because i get easily motion sick. I dont suspect it will really be my jam (not to mention it's pretty pricey for everything.)

Ooo, i'll have to check them out :)

                                                    • Link

I think my last VR experience was the VR Pac-Man that my old-OLD comic shop (from the 1990's, early 2000's) used to have.........it was meh and I didn't like the fact that the ghosts could sneak up on you! XD

I just picked up NiS's "RPG Maker MV" (out for PS4 and Switch) today--I've had it on pre-order for a year and it finally came out.......I'm kinda excited to try it, the interface is supposed to be easy for making your own game, as opposed to older editions of this game series. Given that NiS is really good at quality testing of their games (and is likely the reason for a year's delay on this game), I expect this could be rather interesting to try making one of your own. :)

                                                      • Link

Gosh, sorry about dropping this convo! Was so busy with CozyCon Online and whatnot that I was very distracted. XD

I think VR has improved a lot over the years and they've got some really cool stuff but even if i wanted to try it again and hope i didn't get motion sick, we don't have the space to buy a set and at least right now, visiting someone to try theirs is our of the question lol.

Oooo, well i hope you have a good time with it!

                                                        • Link

It's already interesting how Sony's got price points on their upcoming PS5 with a "standard" version and a "digital" version--however, they don't have numbers. All my local GameStop's said they are only getting 6-7 systems in stores at launch and couldn't even cover the demand of pre-orders. Nothing new from Sony, but I think the game prices are going to hurt them in the end ($70 minimum for most games), despite a cheaper price point on their new system. So if VR is going to be their selling point, I hope they can manage to get their houses in order to get more systems out there for the public. Wonder how VR would work over the internet.........? XD

I hope CozyCon turned out to be a lot of fun! :D

Augh yeah, and I've seen some rumors about "fancy" versions of the PS5 that are thousands of dollars. I'm sitting here just like "what?".

People do use VR on the net all the time currently with PC games, VR Chat, etc, so that itself will likely be okay overall. Probably some tweaks that will be needed as with most things but otherwise probably will work out. Cost wise though, yeah, it's a barrier to entry for sure. VR sets are $$$.

CozyCon was great! I'm really appreciating online events and the push to do more teaching and entertainment live online.

I think Sony sometimes goes too far and it backfires on them. They had originally pushed for the PS4 to be "physical disc free", meaning digital content only and the uproar was massive and made them reconsider the physical disc scenario. I think they're soft-playing that scenario by having a PS5 that plays physical discs and a PS5 that is digital content only and then are looking to the sales after that. Companies need to make a good reason for digital--especially if they plan to charge $70-80 for games. Like coupon bonuses towards other games on their account or something to balance out the trade-in (which is what they want to eliminate, because they make no money from it) society, which are happy to make some money back on their expensive games when they're done playing them. Or digital content versions are comparatively cheaper than physical counterparts.

I think with the online conventions, you can make your own fun with it--it's almost like customizing a convention. And you don't have to haul your supplies on plane or train trips! XD

                                                              • Link

Yeaaaaaaah. I don't personally like digital copies but they certainly are pushing it hard. Special digital copy only bonuses, etc. I've had to purchase them but I LIKE having the cover art and physical box let alone we've only got so much space on consoles for the game data if not on a disc. :/ Not to mention it's not unheard of for digital copies of games to just cease to exist/stop working when if you had the physical copy you could still play whatever content was on the disc with some minor limitations.

The fact that you can spend a bunch of money on digital content to have it taken away is utter crap imo and I don't trust companies not to do that. (As much as not making discs would be better for the environment and all that, which I totally support but there needs to be trust and companies haven't exactly been doing that well. XD) I barely trust steam but at least a lot of the games seem more affordable for digital releases there overall?

I totally agree! You can really make it however suits you (with some limitations BUT.)

                                                                • Link

There are ways to make the digital versions work--and I don't feel that companies are taking all of that into consideration for sure. To be honest...........I still (often) replay "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" more than any other game in existence. It's a DS game, I don't know if Nintendo's put out a digital version (though they have for the original Gold/Silver for the 3DS), but it seems to be "only classics endure" in a digital format. Your favorite game may not be a classic and once it's gone, it's GONE if you don't have a physical form of it! I honestly keep an Arceus ready to trade back and forth between HG and SS just for the bonus story content when I replay one of the versions! XD

If it's digital only, it should be cheaper--there's not the excessive marketing, the physical printing and pressing or all of that. Until digital format gets cheaper, I think more people will still want physical copies for the trade-in or easily replayable value. :)

You don't get to meet people in person or have fun random chats in the "old school way", but in this environment, it's good to have an alternative to conventions so you can still participate. :)

                                                                  • Link

Totally agreed! It's just not at a place where a good many folks can trust the process or even feel it's worth it.

It's true! The "IRL" value is not quite there but when you can't go anywhere, it's good enough. ^_^

(Gosh. I think we should move this to PMs or something. Weasyl is making the boxes smaller and smaller! XD )

                                                                    • Link

Indeed! More conversations in the future--I can't believe how this "relatively short" response looked on my phone over the weekend. It was literally one letter per line. XD
